And now I am alone. I seem to have spent most of the last couple of years in mourning. First my mother, then my wife and now the most affectionate little dog I even owned. Godspeed, Pepper. Go and take care of Mommy until I join you on the other side.

Thoughts & Prayers, Bear.

We may end up with more sympathy for the bear than we should have.

The princess was out walking with her friend tonight. The girls were walking their little dogs, when a german shepherd came running at them. Both girls scooped up their dogs, but the shepherd attacked my daughter, tore the little pup from her arms and damn near tore it in half. Poor little Lucy spent a couple of hours in surgery and is now home with us, but the trauma was bad. Most of the bleeding is stopped, but she won't move, won't take water and is breathing hard from the meds. The vet offered to keep her, but she cried so badly I had to take her home with me.

She's hurting bad.

Nasty:
You goin' to send the Vet's Bill to the 'Shepherd's owner, then ?

:( Prayers Molly

Amen to that.

I think I'd send the sheriff to the shepherd's owner! What a horrible thing to happen to a perfectly harmless little puppy! And to Princess! The owner has a lot to answer for. Heal, little doggy.

Yes, they will be paying for the medical care. I shall pay a visit this weekend with the surgery bill. The followup care will be another week.

The county police visited. Animal control took the German shepherd. It was a rescue animal with apparent issues.

Oh, and it was the princess' birthday. Yeah, she enjoyed her day. Not.

Oh, the poor things. I feel just awful for both Princess and Lucy. What a terrible thing to happen--and on her birthday! Normally I strongly believe that if you just want a dog for company then rescue is the way to go. But as you said, 'issues' exist and need to be addressed. If the owner knew the dog was aggressive the he should have had his yard fenced and a re-programing done with the shepherd. Otherwise, he should have gotten something milder. I'm sorry for the shepherd, too. It's going to be put down because a previous owner probably mistreated or mishandled it but that's no excuse for mauling poor little Lucy and traumatizing Princess. My deepest sympathy and prayers for recovery, both physical and psychological.

Is it possible to get a muzzle for a dog over there?
Perhaps a certain something of information was missing ?

Thanks, bear. Both my babies are a touch traumatized. Lucy Lu is finally taking nourishment. I was a bit worried when she refused to eat. Had to go get some high-calorie stuff and coax her to eat even a small amount. That seemed to perk her up a bit.

The vicious dog in question was a rescue animal. That means it had a previous home that may, or may not, have been unpleasant. The animal might have tested well with humans, but apparently, it has a nasty habit of attacking small dogs. Unfortunately for all involved, the small dog the creature decided to go after was in my daughter's arms--causing my daughter to be in harms way and receive a bite.

The dog is now in the confines of county animal control--on quarantine. It bit a human. It's shots were not up to date. Although no one thinks disease is going to be an issue, the law is clear. It cannot be returned to the home until it passes quarantine.

The other matter is that the bite was not an accident. Accidents happen when dogs are playing and it gets a little rough. This was not an accident. It was a vicious attack--and the dog has a recent history of similar attempts. That means there will be a legal action taken to decide if the creature is fit to return home and if the home is secure enough to house a vicious dog.

I only know one thing. If I see it in my neighborhood again, I shall take my own action. I have a lovely shotgun and I'm a crack shot. I won't hesitate--and I won't be doing it out of cruelty or maliciousness. I will do it with reverence and the full knowledge that it's a beautiful, living creature worthy of respect.

But I won't have this animal running loose, endangering my household and small children and dogs. This is a very nice neighborhood. Almost every household has at least one dog. We all love our doggies. We love playing and walking with them. We need them to complete our homes, just as we do our children. I will do what it takes to keep my family safe.

Oh, and muzzles are not generally used except for vets, groomers and known problem dogs that have to be taken into public. It's considered cruel under most circumstances.

I do hope all goes well;
Sadly, if that happened in UK (particularly a 2nd time), you'd get no chance to get your gun. But muzzles are not uncommon in UK, especially with the bigger dogs.

Well, I just discovered they will be getting the dog back. A long and frank talk was had with the with the owners, advising them action will be taken should the animal come after my children again. When they asked what action, I informed them it would be swift and final. I told them it's not out of anger or meanness. I have to protect my daughter no matter the cost. The wife pulled out a package from the barn and showed me a new heavy chain that would keep the animal controlled. They have a fenced yard and I saw the new pole they have installed in the center, near the dog house. They have assured me the dog will not escape again.

We'll see, but if it does happen again, judgment will be swift.

They have another dog, a yellow lab, who is very sweet. I've always loved that dog. There is no sign of abuse in the home, and the other dog is as affable as any dog can be.

And I'm giving them until mid-week to pay my bills. Poor Lucy is still freaked out. I hope she gets her confidence back.

I hate to see a dog chained up. Put in an enclosed run? Fine. Tall fence? Super. Chain? Uhhh . . .

Well, he cleared the tall fence in a single bound. The chain is required at this point--or a kennel with a roof. The dog also needs reconditioning and retraining--a point which I brought strongly to the top of the conversation.

Perhaps you might offer some advice to the owners ?
You know, as an expert, so to speak ?

I already did. I advised they keep the creature securely home or it would wind up permanently removed from their lives. I won't be cruel, but I will be swift.

To have such a dog, one should know enough to keep it under control and to keep it secured properly. Training is something that comes with the territory. This is not rocket science. It's common sense.

To say I'm not happy is an understatement.

Appropriately so.

Oh please do not get me wrong; I'd have been in the rush to be the next gun to you.
Would this dog require "specialist" training (aka 'expensive') ?
Is such a thing available locally?
Is it really worth it ?

Hope all comes well. . ..

If one knows dogs, and how to train them, one can train at home, but I believe these people have never dealt with such an aggressive animal before.

I have. I had a dog no one else could control. My father and I worked with him. It wasn't easy and it took time just to be able to get close to him. Then the real work began. A year later, we had a very sweet, powerful friend--until an ass in a SUV ran him over while drunk. I miss that dog.

The point is, it's going to take a lot of time and work to recondition the animal. I doubt those people will do it correctly.

What a shame

Uh yeah, a certain Bear moves to the Portland area and now they are setting heat records. 10, 12, 17 degrees above normal in the area. Coincidence? If the California drought goes away then.... We have one hot Bear. ;)
