Hmmm, let's see. The new Oceans of Slumber record is out, I believe. These guys can't do no wrong, IMHO.

https://youtu.be/LSaf0ziSC_Y

Some recent discoveries, no particular order.

Iron Walrus - Sludge-something. As both a former bass player and drummer, I can appreciate a solid groove, and more kick-ass than these guys isn't humanly possible.

https://youtu.be/GBE7qrMT4VY

Dolch - Some really weird industrial shit, but with a strangely ...sensual atmosphere.

https://youtu.be/1yd-VOo9rOw

Midnight - really, really retro. Cirith Ungol and Venom are doing naughty things together and this is what came of it. Weirdly charming.

https://youtu.be/wpeo1ITAdR4

Hooded Priest - Saint Vitus-like Doom Metal. If you like this, also check out Lord Vicar.

https://youtu.be/Rn-UXJwEvEY

King Goat - moar Doom.

https://youtu.be/H6Y2hLoMums

Something I thought I'd like but didn't: Crom - Golden Shields. A supposed Bathory fan, one man pagan army. Usually I dig stuff like that (Ereb Altor or Doomsword too), but here the plastic drums and the uneven mix are a turn-off. Maybe someone else enjoys this more?

https://youtu.be/ZyOmtTXu6DY

More?

Edit: This is awesome too. I'm on a synthwave bender.

Although I like metal, I find it distracting if I'm trying to write, to have it on
at the same time I'm trying to pull ideas from the air.

Listening to it beforehand can help, however, especially if I'm thinking to write a
story about rockers of some persuasion. Stories about metalheads come pretty easy as
I've mixed with them a lot and they are often quite open and not shy about sex, including
the kinky stuff.

I'm more a "Them/Conspiracy" guy, but I love the King to bits, no matter if he's singing in his band or Mercyful Fate (technically his other band now). The only KD release I'm having issues with is "Voodoo". Too much thrash metal, not enough of his special brand of theatrics. Lets see if he manages one last album in his lifetime. I wonder if there will be a sequel to "The Puppet Master".

As for Cradle Of Filth: The last few albums have been enjoyable, if a little predictable. It's good to hear that Mr. Filth has regained full command over his voice, but the songs have become a little formulaic. Call me a heretic (thanks!), but I prefer the Devilment approach.

Well, speaking of black-ish metal: Anyone else pumped for the new Watain album? From what I've heard and read, it seems they went the "Panzerdivision Marduk" route of utter destruction. 30 minutes of ultra-fast brutality. Should be fun

Agreed on both counts. Voodoo didn't have that same feel and seemed more about the actual music than story. The only other album I have mixed feelings on is Abigail 2. Musically very good, story was a good follow up at first, but I didn't like the direction it went or the final ending, more sad than horror.

I had the great pleasure of taking my younger daughter (22 at the time) to see KD in Boston in 2016. IN addition to a smattering of other songs he did the Abigail album start to finish in the middle with a full stage set up and costumed characters.

IT was an amazing performance, the guy does not miss a note even at this age and I felt like I got to share a huge inspiration and part of my teenage years with my daughter who much to many people's chagrin is a female mini me

On Filth, despite its chaotic sound and nature it does seem more contrived than maniacal, but I think you'd have to be a long time fan to see it. My aforementioned daughter turned me on to them ten years ago.

This is a link to Abigail done live start to finish.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfi4M0a3VOs&t=412s

Diamond's Abigail is 'La'fey'

My character (now working on the third novel in the series) Is Abigail Lefay, in homage, but the character is a witch who runs a fetish club in Chicago who incites a war with the local mafia when she slaughters several of them involved in a sex trafficking ring.

The book is a duel tribute to KD''s album's influence on me and the cult classic I spit on your grave.

I don't listen to much of anything when I write, but listen to a lot of stuff when I live. Always been into metal and anything heavy. I'm a weightlifter and it sets the mood for lifting heavy shit.

I've not been back through all the messages in this thread, but some of the classics I've always loved: Zeppelin, Sabbath, Sepultura, Suicidal Tendencies, Maiden, Motorhead, Priest, AC/DC, the old Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Prong, Helmet, Sonic Youth (not really metal, but damn I love that good feedback)

I love heavy industrial music. Older stuff like NIN, Ministry, KMFDM, Atari Teenage Riot, and a bunch of German stuff I won't even be able to type the names of. The stuff that makes you want to run through a brick wall before jumping into a meat grinder.

I lament the stain on society called "nu metal". There's very little there that caused my needle to twitch.

I listen to a lot of new death metal, sludge and Nordic metal bands. Anything angry, but my musical tastes are broad. I might listen to Slayer and then listen to an old country gunfighter ballad.

A funny story. I picked up my son from school the other day. I'd been flipping through XM and had stopped on XMU because they were playing "Teenage Riot" by Sonic Youth. I parked and went in to get him. We got back in the truck and they were playing The Black Keys or something similar. He reached over and turned the knob to Liquid Metal. One of the Slayer songs off the last album was playing. He nodded and said, "That's better." Raising him right, I think.

I've been on a Maiden kick of late. Cleaned my car out and found my Best of the Beast CD and popped it in, now I'm listening to all their albums in a row on a youtube play list while I write.

I’ve been on a Slayer kick since they announced their farewell tour. I’ve also been searching other songs by Lord of the Lost after discovering them. So far, “Raining Stars” and “Drag me to Hell” are my favorites. 🌹Kant👠👠👠

I can never get enough of either Slayer or Maiden. They both stand out to me as real legends. I listen to bands that put out a few albums and disappear, but those two persist. They're two of the first I'd suggest someone start with. Just really influential.

Most recent stuff? Hmm, well, it took me awhile to get to Running Wild. I'm not sure if I mentioned that last time I posted here. But bigger news, I've started listening to a band heavily inspired by Running Wild - to the point that they are called Blazon Stone. If you want a taste of them, I recommend looking up "Mask Of Gold", "War of the Roses", or "Down In The Dark" on YouTube, the greatest pirate of them all.

Oh, also started listening to Elvenking, Beast In Black, Gloryhammer, and Power Quest. Also found a Youtube Channel - "Unknown Power Metal YT" - that I'm investigating for future bands. What can I say? I'm a big Power Metal guy.

When I think of influential bands, yeah, Slayer and Iron Maiden come to mind. However, the core of my heavy metal fascination shines beyond them. Bands like Venom, Death, Obituary, KMFDM, and Samael usually stay on my constant playlists with less heavy stuff like Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd - Legends in their own rights. Two songs stand out : “Immigrant song” and “Run like Hell”.

As a writer, I’ve used song lyrics from both bands in my stories/writings, but using lyrics from heavier bands people aren’t familiar with tends to highlight generation gaps among readers. Honestly, some of the most powerful lyrics I’d like to use in my writing comes from heavier bands. Two lyrics come to mind: Metallica “ Take a look to the sky just before you die- it’s the last time you will.” and Slayer - before you see the light you must die.”

I have a pretty diverse music taste. But most people don’t know my favorite singer is actually Waylon Jennings considering the fact I respect Robert Plant, D,Gilmore, John Tardy, Ronnie James Dio, John Fogerty, Layne Staley, and just about anyone else with a powerful voice. 🌹Kant👠👠👠

Haven't seen Slayer in about ten years, but I saw Maiden live last summer. Wasn't going to go, figured they're getting up there and a bit past it, but out of nostalgia my sister bought us tickets so I went and....wow, as great as ever.

Same for Cooper who I saw a month later, he's non stop, no talking just singing, still has the classic stage set up and blew me away..

On the down side he opened for Deep Purple. Purple is probably my fav non metal band (classic rock/hard rock I guess they are) they were....horrific, bad vocals, the key board player (RIP JOn Lord) was doinga solo every three songs so the other three could keep taking breaks...just bad.

There's a time to put it to rest. I left halfway through their set and was embarrassed for them.

Yeah, they should have stopped when Jon Lord died.

Still, one of THE best gigs I've seen was a 1980s tour of the classic line up with Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Gillan. Brilliant - Made in Japan for real. '85, I think.

I have bought two albums since, but I haven't been into Slayer since Diablous In Musica. They got boring and repetitive...

I saw them for the first time on the Perfect Strangers tour, they were incredible. Blackmore's Rainbow was excellent as well.

Symphony X, Adagio, Zierler, Beyond the Bridge, anything complicated, progressive, and with quality singing.

I'll close my eyes and listen to an album from beginning to end. It's how I recharge my brain, active music listening.

Seasons in the Abyss was the last great Slayer album in my opinion.🌹I listen to Hell Awaits and South of Heaven more than anything they ever did. “Seasons” was great but it’s nowhere near “South of Heaven”🌹

I'll close my eyes and listen to an album from beginning to end. It's how I recharge my brain, active music listening.
Give Oceans Of Slumber a spin. Should be right up your alley.

I've said it in the other music thread, but I don't mind repeating:

The new Visigoth album "Conqueror's Oath" is hands down the best traditional metal record I've heard in at least a decade. Great riffs, fantastic vocals and an epic atmosphere. The jury is still out on whether this might replace Priest's "Painkiller" as best metal album ever for me, but it's a very strong contender nonetheless. Tracks 2, 7 and 8 are my faves, but there are no weak songs on this record.
