No matter how you feel about the statue, the lawlessness of the mob really frightens me. That's not how we do things here. This was malicious, impetuous and illegal. We have a system. Work through it. You just can't tear down anything you don't like. I personally view the statue as a sad reminder that we are still vulnerable to civil war, that we have not learned the lessons of the past. I also view it as an indication of how much things have changed and the resilience of our country to overcome such a dreadful chapter in our history. It's not a tribute by any means. In assessing history, context is important and fortunately, the context has changed. One must be sophisticated enough to interpret that.
