Go to your User CP (top left of each forum page) and look for "edit avatar" in the left-hand column. Follow the instructions there. Pay special attention to the dimension and file-size limitations.
Lit has very generous limits on avatars, but most gifs fail the file-size test; only three or four frames will fit.
