This just proves that as far as having my finger on the pulse of the readers goes, I'm pretty clueless.

More than once on this thread I came out and said I thought my entry pretty much sucked. Guess just like its hard to edit your own work its hard to judge how it will do as well.

What adds to that head scratching is even though I know it won;t last very long "Ashley" is currently at the top list for highest scoring group story of all time.

I figure the trolls will fix that by nights end, but for now it looks good

strange view/votes ratio

OK here are some unofficial but rather interesting statistics

I looked at the top 13 most viewed stories, which were - dare I say of course - all in the Incest category. If you calculate the views/vote ratio for those stories they all range from 75 to 176 views for every vote - except for the last one 'Just one night' by our dear friend Mr S. His story has a ratio of 32 views pr vote. I checked a few Incest stories further down the chart, none of them had less than 74 views pr vote. Interesting hmm ?

In order to be fair I then looked at the top 11 stories according to Sun's list, and five of those did indeed have the same low views/votes ratio as scouries story. But they were in Romance (3), GM (1) and Non-erotic (1) categories. I haven't looked at every contest story, and I did the calculations myself, so I may have made a mistake.

But it did stand out that scouries' story had the most votes by far (2,017), i.e. 500 more that the one with the second most votes, and that story by HeyAll was actually the story with most views. Actually over 100,000 more views than scouries story. This was the reason I made the calculations mentioned above.

And to think that we are supposed to believe that sweeps will help against cheating with votes. Or am I being overly suspicious here ?

Sun - maybe you can make better statistics covering all contest stories ?

All I can come up with is that perhaps they sweep the stories that are more towards the top list in scoring more closely because score is what ultimately wins.

Scouries story score wise was never near the top.

Most likely because for every 5 he gave himself and actual reader was giving him a 2 or 3

Actually over 100,000 more views than scouries story. This was the reason I made the calculations mentioned above.

That does help, but it doesn't account for that many votes. Personally, I believe he somehow has access to hundreds of computers and votes on all of them. I also ask for votes, and hardly ever receive enywhere near 2,000 votes, even on some of my highly rated incest stories.

Do you mean the Valentine's Day Contest? Asking for votes and comments does help get them, especially in a contest.

Is it the approaching Christmas that have you two being so nice and trying to find alternative explanations for this aberration ?

No, HeyAll I do not think it has anything to do with asking for votes

Most authors do that, but your story had the most votes of all (except the one mentioned) and that apparently happened without you asking for readers to vote. Actually ALL three of your stories are both in the top 5 of most views AND most votes, and in the top 5 of most views none of the stories go below a 100 views/votes ratio (and the first 10 stories do not go below 90).

Though I'll admit that in the top 10 of most votes (apart from the aberration) there are three stories with low views/votes ratios, two in Romance and one in LW. Interestingly, one of the romance stories was also the one with most votes swept (174), and the LW story had the most comments (110). So it's not completely clearcut that you always have to have a high number of views to get many votes - but it IS the norm for Incest stories - maybe just because they usually have many views.

As for not sweeping stories with low scores, Sun's first list clearly shows that even stories at the bottom of the contest got swept just as much, and some stories at the top had very few votes swept. So I don't buy that explanation either.

Thanks Sun, that was exactly the statistic I was looking for. Now if you do the same for the previous two or three contests, do you find ANY story in Incest category with a lower than 70 views/votes ratio ? I bet not - but feel free to prove me wrong.

Because it's very interesting how ALL the incest stories except scouries' are up in the first 100 places of your ratio list, and none of them come lower than 74 in views/votes ratio. At the bottom of the list (though maybe you should have reversed the order, as having a high proportion of the readers vote is surely a nice accomplishment) we find all the soft categories: romance, GM, EC, NH, SF - though to be fair there is one LW too. Not that those types of stories do not also appear in the top 100 part of the list, but still.

And as I said before, I would never have questioned the views/votes ratio of scouries' story if he did not have such a ridiculously high vote number compared to HeyAll's story with 100,000 more views. To me there is only one possible explanation - and I'm not out to blame scouries for cheating, because nobody cares about that, as we all knows it happens. No the really interesting part is how the site does not deal with it, because THAT means that the sweeps they do are simply not up to scratch and we can have no trust that they make the contest results fair and reliable.

But I guess this does not come as a surprise to you LC

They deal with it by ignoring it and then manipulating the scores to get who they want to win.

I'm good friends with D-Ltnn off site(although maybe not after this next remark) but her win is a joke pure and simple.

I hate to give scouries credit for anything, but I'd be lying to myself if I didn;t say I agree with his simple statement that the most swept story was the winner and had a huge jump in placing.

Romance is a very high rated category on average. It suffers from very little trolling compared to most categories, because its a pretty non-offensive category.

It has no real squick factor like incest or GM and many of the readers don;t even care about hw uch sex is there or even if there's any, its a very friendly category

Far too friendly for me to believe a story with about 500 votes would have well over a 100 swept.

So they could have given a placing to "spot" a relative newcomer which they deserved.

No, instead they cheat them to put up what they wanted.

Then Spot has the nerve to question it and here comes the site mole and biggest manipulator of stories this side of scouries to give the old

"Well you need to tell your readers not to vote more than once"

Really I cannot believe the amount of bootlicking certain people do on a free site then again I have witnessed how Dark is rewarded, by getting an annual W for the same story over and over again.

So "spot" you were screwed pure and simple as I was earlier this year and many others have been.

Hasn't anyone but me noticed how ridiculously often Dark and another simpleton here keeps saying "its not about winning, but all the exposure?" true to a point, but when they're saying it like parrots over and over again it exposes the fact they're telling the newbs, "Hey don;t bother, they do what they want"

I received my W because it was the 4th time in 6 contests I was going to bed "in the money" the night before and it was becoming a little obvious something was wrong, so they threw me my bone.

Guess I'm supposed to shut up now, but know what?

If no one else wants to call a spade a spade I will.

Spot and the N/e category should have placed there is no explainable reason for a romance story to take that big of a cut except blatant favoritism.

I don;t need the money and its 50/50 I even get the W as I know authors that have never gotten theirs, but end of the day, I don;t really care.

I'd rather lose in a fair contest than to W in a fixed one riddled with games.

There is obviously no AIR contest, but its too bad there wasn't a way to run one without the owners hands in it.

Can anyone comment on how often the winners even get the money? I placed in the Earth Day contest last spring and never got anything. (I did get my W, though, which is nice of course.)

Congratulations to the winners.

I'm disappointed (but not surprised) with how my story fared. It was in a tough category (Lesbian Sex), took a hit because it carries a man's name as its author, was relatively short (around 3000 words) and had an odd, bittersweet twist near its end. Still, I like the story.

More importantly, I met my personal goal - I entered every contest this year. I'm unsure what the new year will bring.

Merry Christmas to everyone who does Christmas.
An all encompassing "Happy Holidays" to those who celebrate something different.
"Bah Humbug" for those who are leftover.

The whole notion of Romance makes me go "squick" so I don't read them or vote, except by accident, or if it is a Lit friend's story.

Neither of my stories did terrific, neither did terrible - would have liked a few more 5s to get my incest one up to an "H". Kind of expected higher read totals.
