HT make my Skype work?

I noticed that Skype on my computer was not connecting for the past several days. Today I woke up to a message telling me to upgrade to Win 7. I am running Vista. I know that Win 7 will no longer be supported come Jan. 2020 but I have been holding off on buying a new computer till I have to.

I did have my computer upgraded a few years back to beef it up enough to run Win 7 so was trying to get that to lope me along until I can get a new computer but... When I check to see if I can upgrade, it won't connect me to the Microsoft server.

Anyone have any suggestions? I was hoping this was just a Skype issue because twice before it gave me fits but... This time it seems like the real deal. I can use my phone but prefer the computer.

Thanks

I'm not that familiar with Skype so I can't tell you everything off hand, but looking at the newest version requires Win 7 minimum. So I guess what it boils down to is what version of Skype you have. I'm assuming older versions supported Vista if you're still using it. The only ways I see making it work is going back to an older version of Skype that works on Vista or upgrading the OS.

Can't get an older version. This is the only version I ever had before. Been using it now for at least a year.

Then perhaps they're phasing out old versions. That's the only thing I can think of without really digging into it. It isn't uncommon for companies to phase out older versions of their products. It sounds like something they're changing on their end rather than yours if it's the same version you've always used. Perhaps there is some sort of workaround out there. What version do you have?

I have the latest version. AFAIK it doesn't say what version that is. I got Skype for for Web and that won't work either. From what I read, the never versions are designed to work only with newer OS. Bummer.

You can actually get older versions of Skype. Here are the available versions (7.36.0.150 and prior) for Vista:

http://www.skaip.org/skype-for-windows-vista

That said, I found that other Vista users are having similar issues:

https://forums.majorgeeks.com/threads/skype-is-not-compatible-with-vista-os.320216/

The roadblock may be a Microsoft thing, which will make it much more difficult/impossible to overcome without an OS upgrade.

I hope that you can get Skype working again, so at least try an older version as it may work. Good luck!

I don't think that skaip thing is legit. Malwarebytes blocked it.

Now the problem I'm having is that while it works on my Iphone, I am not getting audible notifications so am missing messages. I can't keep staring at my phone all day.

My settings are all correct. I just removed Skype from the computer. Rebooted the phone. I did try to get help from Microsoft but can't. Every time I try to log in, it says my email or password are wrong. From there, I go through a loop of a verification process but that still never works. I change the password and it still says it is wrong.

I highly recommend upgrading to Windows 10. It's still a free upgrade, even though Microsoft doesn't advertise it any more. I just upgrade a couple win7 computers last week and it's relatively painless, just takes a while (especially if it's older hardware). Windows 10 is much more secure and I find it actually performs a little better than earlier versions of Windows.

Have to get new computer. This one won't support that.

Didn't mean to send you to a sketchy site, though I didn't have an issue when I visited it. Granted, I didn't download anything off of it.

I did some additional looking: the only version that I can find that on any legit sites is what's referred to as "Classic Skye" (Version 7.41.0.101):

https://download.cnet.com/Skype-Classic/3000-2349_4-10225260.html

It has a release date of March 21, 2018, which may be the same version that you're using since you said you've been using your Skype for about a year now. Even still, it wouldn't hurt to uninstall your current copy and re-install it, since it's not currently working for you.

I also found a Youtube video that addresses connection issues with Skype and Vista and how to solve them:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yztEELmGHn8

The text is in French (I think), but there are English translations. This could also be an option for you.

Hopefully one of these will work until you can upgrade to a new PC.
