What is the troll situation on this site?

With something like over two million members here I think, I'm starting to get a hint.

The General Discussion board looks - a bit untamed, I'd say. It's also notable to get anonymous comments when everyone is sort of already "anonymous" in the sense of having a fictional persona.

For many years I was active on the Internet Move Database (IMDb.com) message boards. There were some good conversations there but a lot of craziness too. In 2017 the boards were removed even though many members protested the site's decision.

As a new member here I'm curious about what to expect.

I'm Insane

insanity
noun in·san·i·ty \ in-ˈsa-nə-tē \
doing something over and over expecting different results*

I keep checking these boards looking for intelligent conversation...

After 15 years, I note my posts (that aren't thread killers) have become more trollish -- egging people on to do crazy things.

Well

I had posted several questions that were asking for help. One was mercilessly mocked and I got 'trolled' only in the thread was highjacked and people's senses were offended.

Looking back, the whole thing was poorly worded and without much direction so there's that.

I think, like almost any other site where there's sex involved, you're going to find strong opinions and people poking at each other.

Here isn't bad. It's by no means the majority of Reddit threads where people burn each other and that's their entertainment.

Literotica seems to generally be full of people sharing experiences and offering ideas, suggestions, viewpoints, or at least help.

I'd score it a 3/10 on level of trolliness.

...

Well, I just deleted everything in this post I thought I would get.............

We should really apologize about our Troll situation ...I know they are a sorry bunch.

We keep hoping they will get better at it but the truth is they are hopeless.

We have not had a troll worth the name here in about ten years.:(

I don't have any experience with Reddit; I'm getting a bit too old to keep up with everything out there.

Actually IMDb.com really wasn't that bad, maybe two out of ten at worst. Apparently it's human nature to vividly remember negative experiences while discounting the positive ones.

In the (good?) old pre-Internet days it was hard to mess with the minds of strangers or acquaintances and still remain anonymous and invulnerable. There were obscene and prank phone calls and not much else. I guess a few people sent things through the mail but that took some effort.

They're a viscous er I mean vicious lot on the General and Politics boards. Much sweeter over on the Playground sub-forum of Personals. I longingly recall <SensibleErection.Com> where posts and comments were voted up or down, with consequences, thus discouraging flame wars. But LIT? If you're thin-skinned, leave here now.

The main reason I came to this site is to post some fiction and get feedback. The message boards are part of that.

With the first story I submitted (earlier this week) I had some people who liked it, some who gave constructive criticism and those who really "roasted" it mostly remained anonymous. I can handle that.

I think you need the right bait to get a troll’s attention.

Sometimes they create their own bait.

Here's a story from the IMDb.com site a number of years ago. A guy posted a message claiming he had insider's knowledge about a certain actress who had a certain fetish. He claimed one of his relatives had done some kind of work for her (repairing her house maybe - I may have forgotten). In fact she still owed his relative some money.

He made it sound quite plausible. The only problem was that he started posting that same story for many other female celebrities, right down to them owing money to this relative. There were separate message boards for each celebrity so perhaps he assumed no one would notice.

Of course it was easy to cross-reference his posts through his user-name. When people starting calling him out on this he went bonkers - posting the nastiest insults and threats against his critics. It seemed that this fetish or at least interest he was talking about was actually one of his own.

Trolls here are loners with boners, luzers and boozers, living in Mom's basement, dripping crumbs and boogers and angst wherever they go. They are safe to ignore.

It depends on where you are on this site.

You can get useful input with not too much trolling at the Author's Hangout and Story Feedback sections. Sometimes, the responses to a question at AH may be a bit tart if someone thinks you've asked a question badly or if you've asked a question that's been beaten into the ground already. But, in general, there are plenty of nice, helpful people. Lots of very good advice if you know the right questions to ask.

The General and Politics Boards are full of trolling and people talking past each other. Talking politics in social media is, in my experience, nearly always hopeless. And on a porn story site, in particular -- I don't know why people even bother.

The Loving Wives category is full of vicious, nasty trolls who will attack your story if it features a wife having sex outside of marriage and not paying any consequence for it. But this is a phenomenon that is unique to this category.

It's a really, really big Site. That's it's great advantage. But that means you're going to get some bad eggs. You can navigate around them, to some extent, and you learn not to take them too seriously.
