Most Iconic Album Of Your Lifetime

Which musician or album had a profound affect on your life?

For me it was; Dr.Dre - The Chronic.

Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Rick Wakeman. It still gives me goosebumps.

That, and Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto (The Emperor), but that is less a specific recording than the music, so it is off topic for here.

4kpDI+

All his stuff rocks and I hate to dissect his albums on lists, but this joint in particular was the Alpha and the Omega when I was on the come up back in the day. Basically set standards and shaped thought processes. Also was the first full album I ever purchased.

Dual, Pieces of you by Jewel, and Eight arms to hold you, by Veruca Salt.

And Iconic suggests biggest of your time, not most important to you.

Hard to beat Sgt. Pepper's if we're going for iconic.

Not my cup of tea, sorry.

Your cup of tea is someone quoting epic albums in everyones top 500?

The most iconic since I have been kicking are Micheal Jacksons Thriller, Madonna's Like A Prayer, Nirvana's Nevermind, Radiohead's The Bends, and Ok Computer. Guns'n'Roses Appetite for Destruction, Dire Straits Brothers in Arms. And they are only the ones I own in a 14 year period.

I agree with all that except, Madonna. I'm not keen on her stuff. What about Blondie's Parallel Lines? I think that should merit inclusion.
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours, that's gotta be included.

Not since I was born, and I could have named way more anyway. Both before my time like A night at the Opera, Dark Side, IV, Sargeant Peppers etc, also which I all own, but again, before my lifetime.

And you said Iconic... Madonna is still the most icon woman of the last 30 years, and I could name 4 albums I prefer over it.

Oops theirs me getting it wrong on my own thread! They're all before I was born also lol 😡

well, probably minor threat's complete discography. not my favorite album, but it definitely opened a big window into a world beyond classic rock, late 80's/early 90's hip hop and grunge.

though born against or econochrist may have come first, but i'm not sure. also, screeching weasel belongs in there somewhere even though i got sick of them fairly quickly.

there are several,
for various reasons...

:tommy and thick as a brick:

as (then) modern rock opera...
both expanded, in different ways, the concepts of what an album could do.

:the white album:

what a diverse collection of sound, production and experimentation at a point perhaps, just past the apex of their creative talents. rubber soul and sgt pepper usually get the nod here, but... the white album was a glutton's gourmet feast with all the toys and tons of improvisation...

:the big bamboo:

yes... cheech and chong... perhaps the last, and certainly most influential comedy album in a long line of outlier comedy - primarily up til about then, presented by album

:the message:

sure... it was a single, not an album, but... it opened up mainstream's veins to... (for lack of a better catch all in retrospect)... gritty urban social commentary... give props in this by mentioning

:what's going on: by marvin gaye

i'm no doubt fucking with more than a few folk's notions of both what is iconic as opposed to what stands the test of time ( or what even is good), but... these stand out to me personally...

oh. 1 more.

:the velvet underground and nico:

there is so much odd shit going on in this album
that both became manna to those who came after
and then mainstream once digested
that... it remains an interesting document and stepping stone...

i should stop there.
fire away.

Geez, I don't know any!

shit. you just reminded about the velvet underground. can i change my answer?

though that wasn't an album, really. it was the song heroin on the doors soundtrack. then i asked questions and a kind teacher loaned me some tapes and that was that. still love me some lou reed.

though, oddly, it took me several years to start digging deeper and listening to john cale's solo stuff and decades to finally listen to mo tucker's solo work (which was uneven but occasionally way better than you'd think). and nico? i have no idea when i started listening to her, but it was ages ago.

i'd ramble more, but i have to pee and i hate coming back to this shit, so.... post.

Pet Sounds was an absolute groundbreaker in terms of production.

Yes~Close to the Edge

The first music I listened to simply for my own enjoyment.

I'll agree with the Cleaves about "the white album" and "what's going on", mostly where I am growing up hearing it. Long drives to the mountains to go cut oak wood. The latter, grooving with one of the brothers and my first introduction to "Vietnam" era music.

The Clash~ London calling

Such anger! And one of my first concerts.

The Nephilim by Fields of the Nephilim

Just kidding.

It's actually somewhat difficult to say what album has had the greatest personal significance for me. Sometimes, I think I could say Treasure by Cocteau Twins, or I could say Disintegration by The Cure—or I could say Trøllabundin by Eivør Pálsdóttir. In a way, it was the first album that was 'mine', that I wasn't late to the party, that I knew her brilliance and almost no one else did.
