Birkenhead Drill

Despite the Birkenhead Drill 'Women and children first' a recent study of shipping disasters of the 20th Century has shown that women are much more likely to die than men when a ship sinks.

Why? Various suggestions - unsuitable clothing (too much or too little); fitness; superior strength of men fighting to get off the ship; and chivalry is dead...

The Birkenhead Drill is remembered because it was so unusual.

Edited for PS: There was no evidence that women travelling on British ships had a better chance of survival. On some British ships their survival rate was even worse than the norm.
