The benefits of misbehaviour...

I've been sent to Facebook jail for a week for advocating the punching of Nazis and the Nazi-adjacent. No posting for me, nor any Facebook messenger to converse with distant friends. Guess I missed the memo about Zuckerbook becoming a Nazi safety advocacy group. :/

But that aside, I am finding that I have much more time on my hands to do things like write. Uninterrupted by constant updates about cats, or quizzes asking me to find out what type of pizza I am, I am writing rather prolifically all of a sudden. Just today, I've cranked out over 17,000 words.

Maybe I should be thankful. I didn't realize exactly how hooked up and hamstrung I was by social media until out-of-control mods kicked me in the proverbial shmoo. It's actually quite liberating.

When my week in Nazibook jail is up, I'm hoping I don't fall back into old patterns and habits. I could write the Great Klingon-Canadian novel at this rate.

Has anyone else found themselves insidiously enslaved to their social media, to the detriment of their writing? I am curious.

I check in to FB a few times a day. Have only used Twitter a couple of times. I don't usually do the quizzes because they are often malware or viruses. But... What kind of pizza were you?

I think I last FB'd around 2007 and I scrubbed as much as possible after. LIT is now my social medium. Pathetic.

Hmmm. I guess the Lit-boards are too obvious? I do spend way too much time reading all these messages, though. It does keep me away from writing.

Not a fan of social media. I forget it's there quite often. I like connecting with people, but there's so much negative, stupid crap going on in the world that gets shoved into your feed, and so many idiots with low IQs commenting on those events [that I also want to punch], that yes, it can be distracting. I'm happier if I stay away from it.

This is true. I had to eliminate some of those people. Much better now. I also learned that sometimes it's better to keep my mouth shut and not reply.

I had Facebook for about a week about five years ago. That cured me of social media. I deleted the whole mess and have never looked back.

As a side note, most of the people on Facebook were the same people I talked to here on Lit. The rest were usually rejected.

Frankly, what with 'false news' and the uneducated twerps sometimes found on fb I'd drop it in the trash soon as look at it. But my family is well-spread and since the little buggers seem to have forgotten how to write, it seems that it's the only way I get to discover that events are happening.

Facebook is the definition of banality. The original intent-a way for family and friends to keep in touch over long distances and share things-was a good one.

Now its people posting every random useless thought that flows through their head and couples and friends fighting publicly for everyone to see. Let alone the bullying.

Its the definition of herd, sheeple, lemmings, whatever term you prefer.

Never had one, never will and I've asked-and she respects my wishes-that my wife who does have it never post a picture or anything about me at all on there. That's the degree of how little I want to do with it.

Several years ago on the urging of several people I created an FB page for a pen name(okay daughter did it, I had no interest in figuring it out) I had it for two weeks and it drove me crazy knowing I had it so I deleted it.

To each their own, but people can keep that crap.

Shows how whacked they are. You got a time out for a 'threat' okay, whatever. Meanwhile a friend of mine who has an FB author page for romances is getting bombarded with dick pics(its romance, not erotica and she only has a very plain pic up there) and when she complained FB said it doesn't violate any policy.

I don't know why, but letting someone use that title bugs me. It glamorizes a murderous adversary and glorifies hateful peoples self-worth ... I'm not going to preach, but there are no real Nazis anymore.

17-thousand words, holy shit.

Edit: No face book, no twitter, no snapchat, this is as close to social media as I come and even now I'm doing my best to distance myself from it. Write, submit, write some more, that's all I want to do and if I do use the internet, do so for only minutes at a time if I'm not doing a little bit of research.

Edit Again:

Facebook needs to offer some sort of 'User solicitation option' meaning, the user of that page can decide if they want 'Adult Material' and what level of explicitness (it took me forever to think of that word). They click a warning (like those age verification warnings) and if you violate the rules of that person's page and are reported, you get handed a penalty. It seems like it should be easy, but I'm not a programmer.
I believe FB has a way that people have to 'ask' to send you messages so you only see what you want or only friends can see your page. But when the page is for advertising, that kind of defeats the purpose.

As for adult material...not sure how they would screen it. How would the program know a pic being sent is x-rated and not just a regular picture?

Then again, this is not a facebook problem its an asshole pathetic man problem. For the life of me I can't imagine running around the internet sending a picture of my cock to every single female I find on there.

My wife gets them on her twitter page-which advertises her motivational speaking and life coaching business. Nothing screams erotic like motivational speaking. One thing she's told me is she can't believe some guys are actually proud of what they're sending

People would still get them, but now they could at least do something about it.

If someone can program Photoshop and Word and Excel, then someone can figure this problem out.
Coz few people have a static IP anymore and if you get a well-configured vpn with a provider that doesn't save logs,*and a Tor browser, it can be difficult to track.
I haven't used FB in ages, but when I did I pretty much assumed the price I paid was my anonymity and wading through other people's shit.

I only know FB has the private conversation option. I'm a big fan of that. I very rarely post on FB.

Supposedly,.the idea is for a bonefide private conversation w/out the need to friend them.

The rest of what the OP posted are worth looking into.

By the way, Mr. Hammer, were you advocating the punching of surviving war criminals from the Nazi party, Neo-Nazis that want to revive German Nationalsozialismus, or members of any Nationalist Socialist Party?
My only social media downfall is Pinterest. So hard to stop looking at pinboards!

I pretty much treat FB as a way to receive the occasional message from a far away friend. I won't step foot in there for any other reason. Twitter I think of as a malignant infection hell-bent on unhinging society and turning us all into complete assholes. I would like to be cured of it, but I still consume it for very specific things. I've found that with the right filters and a carefully put together list, I can mostly weed out the incendiary blather. Instagram is probably the only platform I really enjoy, but that's just tapping into my urges as a hobbiest photographer and involves very little actual interactions.

But don't listen to me. After all this, I literally just posted a story about a couple using Twitter as a tool to engage their exhibitionist side.

Me too. I know they'll suspend an account for suspicious activities or violating policies but not for a specific length of time.
Edit- Their new community and privacy policy aren't much better at protecting users than before the whole Cambridge Analytica fiasco, so even more reason to leave FB behind
