David is half ghost and half human (though given how far along he is in his illness that is probably not accurate) as such he has a full range of abilities ghost have theoretically been known to have

He can become pure ectoplasma therefore becoming a goo like creature

Backstory:

David was always interested in the paranormal, his parents devote scientist, Athiest, and self proclaimed realist could not understands the boys obsession with the occult. Even in a world full of recently founded super humans young David was more interested in ghouls and ghosts.

This all came to a head when David was 25

David had then joined A small paranormal research group. They were small and had yet to catch a break on catching any thing bigger than a few EMF readings. It was David who suggested they go to the old haunted house infamous for both its paranormal activity and rumors of the old caretaker being into the occult. They went having to break in because it was not open to the public. What began was a simply paranormal experiment with every one (there were five) going around taking readings and asking question. David however was left alone to run his experiments. David believe that ghost were rooted in science and he was determined to prove that there was an scientific reasoning behind the after life.

He set up a invention he had designed which was to act as a massive power dumb to what he believed was the unique signature ghost operated on. However as he was setting up and was inside the machine some thing (it was revealed to him moments later to be a ghost when the creature bonded to him) activated the machine. The ghost was sucked in and their was a massive energy dump that effectively merged the two DNA's together. The ghost ceased to exist becoming pure ectoplasma energy that saturated and morphed Davids DNA structure.

David was reborn and his parents who had previously shunned him took him in and tried to figure out what had happened to him. No cure was found and Spectre spent a few years defending his home town and becoming a member of the defenders five years into his career however the illness was discovered and even though both the top defenders scientist and his parents promised to cure him David instead made his peace with the disease and promised to help as many people as he could with the time he had left.
