Recommend an Author

I generally used the HoF method of finding interesting stories when I first got here. Then my sorry ass started showing up in them and I realized that methodology is severely flawed... :/

If you're a person of specific tastes, then using the tags is not a bad option, assuming that the authors include the kink you're looking for. The other thing you might do is visit the profile page of celebrated authors and see who they've favourited. JasonClearwater generally publishes in a category I don't read, but I would certainly trust to his taste in other authors to find good stories.

Also, try looking at contest winners. That's usually a good bet as well.

Just my two Canadian cents (so, about 1.75 cents American) ;)

Well, I look at anyone who favorited me coz their tastes are obviously just superb and I see who else they've favorited and that's given me some good leads

I have the confidence to feel like my work meets these requirements. My stories Orchid, Violet, The Incident At Last Home, and Terrible Company are accessible and well written, and cover a wide variety of themes, kinks, and storytelling styles.

I concur, AwkwardMD's stories are brilliantly executed and a refreshing change from the usual drivel found on this site. Her stories were the first ones I read that were decidedly outside of the box. I highly recommend them.:heart::heart:

Also, don't let the red H's be any sort of a guide to a well written story. Most of the H stories are lame and the voting system is kind of skewed, more of a popularity contest amongst litsters and the most decidedly mainstream, pedestrian stories on here. That's why they get the votes, people like to stick to the pap they know, it's comforting and doesn't challenge their intellect. Kind of like comfort food and fluffy bunnies.

I love to write and tell stories. As of late, i’ve noticed more and more people either favoriting me as an author or favoriting several stories I’ve written in the last two years. I suppose that means something, but I just keep writing. I’m not after a popularity contest, nor do I compete in the contests. It’s nice to have a fan base who enjoy reading my stories, though. Makes me think I’m doing something right.

Would you please pull your ass out of there and put your story back in? Nobody's out there looking for your ass (except perhaps the loan shark) but people actually like to look there for your stories ;)

Fully agreed on that. Also, you find out that people (like SimonDoom readily admitted, and I share that feeling wholeheartedly) almost exclusively read stories which are (almost) devoid of spelling and grammar mistakes. So once you figure that out, you at least know that whatever Simon has on his favorites list, it's not gonna be some atrocity trying to look like a story.

I would like to suggest Soma99. Her stories are not only well written, but always draw me in so that I identify with one of the characters.

So your opinion trumps thousands, tens of thousands, of other opinions? What do you think people are basing their opinion on?

This is a porn site, those H is for keeping their interest in a porn story with a nice, nutty payoff or finding themselves with creamy center at the end of their perusal. They aren't here for an intellectual challenge, if they want those they'll go to a bookstore and buy a book from a reputable publisher on philosophy and perspective, or a textbook on a subject they know nothing about.

Your statement seemed overly harsh.

I'd start with the Red H's, and if they didn't help me out, I'd move on to something else. I will say, my favorite stories on here when I used to read years gone by and by and by (I wish they'd stop going by in such a hurry) were a mix of Red H's and non Red H's. But there are so many on here that's it's easier to start with Red.

Edit:
Anyone able to recommend authors that aren't on the AH and not on a top list?

I kind of agree with RocketLauncher on this one.

In most categories (but not LW, where red Hs are rare) a red H means the story is in the top 25% to 30% of stories in the category. So it's not much of a test for true excellence, if that's what one is looking for. Lots of stories with bad prose get over that hump.

A red H means that the story satisfied the particular desires of a large number of the readers in the category in which it was submitted. There are tons of crappy incest stories with scores sneaking just over the 4.5 line that are there because, despite bad grammar and spelling and simplistic prose, they have just enough cliche incest/taboo elements to satisfy readers' stroke needs. If that's what you want -- and there's nothing wrong with that, in my view -- then the red H will help you.

But if, as the OP claimed to want, you are looking for really "good" stories here -- erotic stories that come closer to the standards one would expect of stories published in magazines, with solid prose style and reliable grammar, etc. -- that little red H isn't going to tell you much. I'd much rather trust the judgment of a reader I've come to rely upon and look over his/her lists of authors.

Hell Simon, you even missed or forgot Blind_Justice's remark that his prison Guard had a voice modulator to disguise their sex. If you make that mistake, how do I trust you to understand what I'm saying?

.

Holy crap, you're right. I did miss that.

How do I trust myself?

Bon voyage, wherever you are going. Send postcards, and come back soon.

I find what you're saying a little insulting to some of the brilliant authors on here and the readership in general. I find a lot of literature amongst the erotica and I am always intrigued by the creative, intelligent, well written stories, which are obviously penned by highly educated and/or extremely gifted authors. I tend to peruse all the categories not just one or two because I have found some excellent stories in LW and Fetish. I do think people come for stroke stories but I think you'd be surprised how many people are looking to enjoy excellent erotica not just straight up porn.
I agree that looking at a writer's, whose work you enjoy, favourited authors is a decent way to go down the rabbit hole.

A lot of readers come here for the stroke stories and if they find something better they're pleasantly surprised- it's a bonus. There are some gems on Literotica but the struggle is to find them.

Wasn't that much of a struggle, you drop by often enough :D

I think there are plenty of great stories and plenty of great writers as well here. The trick is indeed to find them.

Seeing how I generally browse only around I/T (come on, I don't have time to scour the other ones as well ... I have writing to do, people! Yes, that includes here ;) ) the stories I enjoyed reading came from names like
MentalCase (Just the Six of Us)
BiscuitHammer (Alex & Alexa - and yes, Mike & Karen is the continuation, I know that)

Well, there are a few more, but I thought I'd point out the ones with a little more substance than just good strokers.

I'm an I/T fan, not just writing it, but reading.

It continues to blow my mind-and speaks volumes about the category itself-that people think JTSOU is good. Its a EL James style story that rip offs many popular prior series and tosses them together 4 sisters getting banged 24/7 by a brother...oh, how creative.

Its trash, most top authors in the I/T category have forgotten better ideas than that.

I thought it was good in the way it was written. It might not be pure literature and it might not be mind-blowingly original, but it's got enough substance for me to enjoy. But perhaps it's also simply due to it being a longer story and me getting attached to characters the longer a story takes.
I don't know. I just enjoyed reading it. There are better stories out there for sure, but I didn't enjoy reading them as much, so that's why I didn't list those. After all, it's "recommend an author", I assumed that's because one would recommend authors whose stories you enjoyed reading.

And come on, give me a break already. I'm still new here, haven't read even a quarter of what you've contributed in terms of stories here, so my options to suggest stories are a little limited :)

BlackShanglan

BlackShanglan wrote just 8 stories and 4 poems between 2004 and 2006 and got 4 green E's and won a competition. My opinion only, but I have never read a better erotic story than "Meer Kass" on this site. Here's the link.

I suspect that some of the old hands here would have a pretty high opinion of the "Horse"

Edited to add. The Horse was a pretty good judge too. A short favourites list with some excellent writers from that era

Its really a shame Alwaywantedto pulled his stories couple years back(due to the fact he was terminally ill) the man was a true master and to this day the best compliment I ever received on a taboo story was when someone said I had the potential to be his heir apparent.

Not that I ever could be, the guy had a style all his own the stories had some underlying darkness in some of them that intrigued me as in it wasn't blatant you had to really be reading and not wanking to see it.

I'm a little hard on the story in question because I was one of the authors he ahem 'borrowed from' in the later chapters.

The series has two levels of quality, the first half was far better because he had an editor who he later admitted didn't just edit, but wrote parts of the story, when he left it went downhill.

So I guess like most authors I don't respect needing to use other peoples ideas and who can't even do all their own writing. Unlike most authors however, I'm blunt enough to come out and say it(or you could use the word asshole I guess)

If you enjoyed it, then that's what counts. I'm just tired of seeing it touted when there is so much better material by more creative people out there that don't get any attention.

If you're looking for an I/T recommendation

8letters is you're more about the sex.

Mindsmirror if you really want some creative and well written stories. Not for everyone, some are a little darker, but they are damn good.

Fair enough to me to warrant your criticism justified.

It'll amuse you to know that the continuation of Mike & Karen will be Freja & Jeanie- think the Bing Crosby And Bob Hope Road Movies, but with two promiscuous girls in love.

...
Are you sure you want to get those Hordes to trample you with demands on a continuation of Mike & Karen when there's already three chapters up for Freja & Jeanie? :D

Ugh. Next thing you know you're gonna have to include a relational chart like Fuuga.

I have full faith in your ability to keep track of three couples. I believe in you, you can do the thing!

I know I've personally read only a very small percentage of the stories on this site so I wouldn't be comfortable making such sweeping statements. It's cool to tout AwkwardMD's stories if you like them but unless you've read the majority of stories on Lit then why just trash them?

There does seem to be those, whether discussing film, music, or literature, that believe the more popular something is the less they will like it, almost on principle. Not saying that's where you are coming from and I don't think elitism is a dirty word but there is also a reason why it can rankle people.

Like people say - different strokes for different folks - and it also depends what one is searching for. In general I read to be entertained and while proper spelling and punctuation is preferred it isn't the only thing. A well told story with engaging characters is desirable but what appeals to me may not appeal to someone else. And it's fine to challenge people's intellect if it is also entertains them but there are also times someone wants a light, fun read or in some cases something sexy that stimulates their libido or even provides them stroke material.

I agree the red H (or HOF or contest winners) is an imperfect method of finding good writers but there isn't a perfect one for most and it's as good as say taking anyone's opinion from this thread.
Plus kittens and puppies are comforting (and adorable), fluffy bunnies are nuisances at best. Only good for destroying a person's vegetable patch. Elmer Fudd had the right idea though he was incompetent.

If you read the OP's blurb you'll see they were looking for quality stories and found using categories as a guide insufficient. I agree. You will find more H's in the more popular categories but enjoyable and well written works can be found in the less popular and more vindictive ones as well. I'm suggesting that simply using a H as a standard of a good story can be somewhat deceiving.Perhaps I came across as a little glib but I still maintain that finding an author who's work you respect, H or no H, will probably lead one down a path better suited to their particular tastes, stroke OR think piece.
As long as fluffy bunnies aren't being grumpy this kitty rather likes them.;):rose:

Seeing your reply, I thought I'd better point that out for you.
