Poetry in song

Isn't this a song by Leonard Cohen? I think it is performed by Jeff Buckley, but composed and originally performed by Leonard Cohen.

Hallelujah has been performed by countless artists (KD Lang's version being my personal favourite). And yes, you are correct, Leonard is the mastermind behind this piece.

Cold, Cold Heart

I tried so hard my dear to show that you're my every dream
Yet you're afraid each thing I do is just some evil scheme
A memory from your lonesome past keeps us so far apart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart?

Another love before my time made your heart sad and blue
And so my heart is paying now for things I did not do
In anger unkind words are said that make the teardrops start
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart?

There was a time when I believed that you belonged to me
But now I know your heart is shackled to a memory
The more I learn to care for you, the more we drift apart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart?

You'll never know how much it hurts to see you sit and cry
You know you need and want my love yet you're afraid to try
Why do you run and hide from life to try it just ain't smart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart?

new song I am working on

Shoulderless Road

All my life been a shoulderless road
with nowhere to pull over.
Better to be on it than off it
until you cross the river.
('till you cross the river)

There you sit with a crate of peaches
and barrel of Bourbon whiskey.
I'll take all the sweet you got
if you tell me you have missed me.
(tell me you miss me)

{Bridge}
Time to drive right off the grid
into the open field.
We can pitch ourselves a home
by the time the grass is healed.
This side of the river.

Repeat V. 1 & 2 (at least until I think of V. 3 & 4)

Tarred and Feathered - Cardiacs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRZ2Xw_o6FY A mad, mad song by a mad, mad man

I find I understand the rules but cannot find the reasons
Do they include everything and they change for every season
It's only a matter of

Time is of the essence, shall I put up some resistance?
Cursed with the awareness of my own existance
It's only a matter of

Time tends to pass by quicker than the nail
That boxes me together forever it forms the seal
Is the knowledge of my own existance real?

A slice of life a piece of mind
Laid on a plate of my own kind
I'll take a key from the gravy
And unlock the cage that holds the ravens in

What's it like flying high?
I've a cone for a beak, but the tar makes me cry
That holds me together, tarred and feathered

Breathing home, hoping for the day
The radio and television's thrown the rest away
Oh dear me, look who's come around
Now all I have to do is hide my body in the ground
It's all I have to do

When they who to the sea go down
And in the waters ply their toil
Are lifted on the surges crown
And plunged where seething eddies boil

Always loved this song - and I just came across this acoustic version

Thanks, Desejo. I always love checking out people's links from this thread.

This has been going through my head for a couple of weeks now. Great example of lyrical storytelling, I think. Flashbacks are so effectively handled.

Kate Bush's Houdini

I wait at the table,
And hold hands with weeping strangers,
Wait for you
To join the group.

The tambourine jingle-jangles.
The medium roams and rambles.
Not taken in,
I break the circle.

I want this man
To go away now.

With a kiss
I'd pass the key
And feel your tongue
Teasing and receiving.
With your spit
Still on my lip,
You hit the water.

Him and I in the room
To prove you are with us too.

He's using code that only you and I know.
This is no trick of his.
This is your magic.

I'd catch the cues,
Watching you,
Hoping you'd do something wrong.

Everybody thinks you'll never make it,
But every time,
You escape:

'Rosabel believe,
Not even eternity
Can hold Houdini!'

"Rosabel, believe!"

Through the glass
I'd watch you breathe.
("Not even eternity--")
Bound and drowned,
And paler than you've ever been.
("--will hold Houdini!")

With your life
The only thing in my mind--
We pull you from the water!

(Houdini!)

You ("Hou-di-ni...")
And I
And Rosabel believe.
