Purple's Doodles I

Agree the poster who said "try charcoal". It's beautiful for body shading and really sensuous, especially if you use your finger tip to blend. Check my story file - I've got half a dozen drawings posted there, mostly charcoal.

When you get your confidence up, enquire at a drawing school or art supplies shop, to find out somewhere that runs live modelling classes. Nothing improves you faster than having a live nude in front of your easel. I've done a couple, you get a teacher, a model who is comfortable posing for a bunch of artists, and fellow artists. There will always be someone better than you, but always someone even more a beginner than you. You get all sorts.

Then find a good Tumblr blog - not porn blogs, but there are many beautiful blogs run by people who enjoy artistic nudes, or who use their own bodies as their canvases. You tend to get far better poses from those blogs - porn images get tasteless real fast, and there's usually no light and shade. Black and white images help a lot, because the lack of colour sorts out tone.

Keep going, you've got a good eye; but seriously, try charcoal, it's so much better than pencil for someone starting out. Graphite can be wonderful, but you've got to be well progressed in all of the technical aspects of drawing, I think, for it to be really good.

Also, use big sheets of paper - A0, A1, A2. A3 the smallest, I reckon. A4 is for writing on, not drawing. It's just too small.
