I Saw Three Ships

I saw three ships come sailing in...

This carol is OK until Verse 2 asks "And what was in those ships all three?"

Verse 3 gives the answer "Our Saviour Christ and His Lady". How do the two of them fit into THREE ships? And who is 'His Lady'? That title is usually given to a spouse. Da Vinci Code?

Verse 4 asks "Pray, whither sailed those ships all three?" and

Verse 5 gives the surprising answer: "O, they sailed into Bethlehem."

Really? Bethlehem was and is landlocked.

It is a pleasant carol but navigationally challenged.

And if he was BORN in Bethlehem, how did he arrive by ship(s)?
Any others?

this is highly entertaining. I will listen with a more discerning ear.

Here we come a-wassailing, among the leaves so green...

"Leaves so green"? The trees would be bare at Christmas.

Violets aren't blue, are they? Violets are violet.

This is Poetry; Math and Logic are over that way.

Pines and 'Christmas trees'? And also perhaps a confusion with the Spring Wassail, at which peasants and lords gathered to drink in orchards and pray for a good harvest.

Could be a reference to camels ,otherwise known as ships of the desert .

Christ is the one but three. The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. So there could have been four. Mary would have stuck with her son in one ship. As we can not prove or see the others, they could have been in the other two boats.

How did Jesus get back to Judea after Herod's death. By ship from Egypt? He may have travelled as far as Spain or even India. They do sail the Dead Sea.

How about "troll the ancient yuletide carole"? I've never trolled a carol. I have heard bells "toll" ancient yuletide caroles.

Trolling used to cause amusement when I was at school.

Trolling meant 'seeking fellow gay men for sex' when that was illegal.

The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines the verb 'to troll' as 3. to sing (something) in a happy and carefree way.

That was presumably after having imbibed the alcoholic punch and stuffed yourself with Figgy Pudding.
