Long story short, one of those "militia" guys wandering in the desert and pretending to be something special, showed up in one of their pictures holding his weapon. Only problem is the guy is a convicted felon which means . . . no weapons allowed.

Using the rule of law, the FBI with assistance from local police, arrested the criminal and booked him for another stay in jail.

Also:

Customs and Border Protection said on its Twitter account that it "does not endorse or condone private groups or organizations that take enforcement matters into their own hands. Interference by civilians in law enforcement matters could have public safety and legal consequences for all parties involved."

tRump and Kirstjen Nielsen called for volunteers to assist Border Patrol and I.C.E. at the border.

The Christian aid volunteers that comforted the asylum seekers were arrested.

Armed white nationalist militias are now coordinating with U.S. Border Patrol to 'detain' migrants

"The classic excuse that these militias and other gun fanatics use is the right to “defend” themselves. Fair enough. We all have a right to defend ourselves. But that right does not extend to acting as a private, unregulated police force, unanswerable to the public, that deliberately seeks out opportunities to threaten and arrest other people. When a group decides it can do that, and when the government looks away, we are crossing into very uncharted, very dangerous territory."

Now tRump has a poster boy (grandfather ?).

Let's be clear: kidnapping migrants

is against the law.

There have also been concerns that the men, who wear military-style clothes, could be misrepresenting themselves as border patrol agents. In another video, Benvie filmed himself stopping a group of four adults and three children and said “border patrol” as he approached, before calling for another member of his group to join him. In an apparent call to border patrol, one man said: “Hello, I’ve got seven over here.”

The UCP has previously presented itself as a group of “volunteers” aiding border patrol and supporting Trump. In recent years, there have been numerous reports of an increase in paramilitary groups and xenophobic activists surveilling the border, working with US agents and targeting undocumented people.

On Thursday, a Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said border patrol “welcomes assistance from the community” but “does not endorse private groups or organizations taking enforcement matters into their own hands”.

Apparently these "patriots" are nothing more than criminals:

A man who has been a spokesman for a small group of armed civilians patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border was charged with impersonating a U.S. officer or employee.

An indictment returned Wednesday by a grand jury in New Mexico charged James Christopher Benvie, 44, of Albany, Minnesota, with two counts of false personation of a U.S. officer or employee, federal prosecutors said in a news release Friday. He faces up to three years in prison if convicted.
. . .
In Oklahoma, Benvie was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and attempting to obtain money by false pretenses. Benvie's defense attorney in that case, David Bedford of Oklahoma City, said Sunday that he could not discuss the matter.

These are the same charges Larry Hopkins (see above) was charged with.
