Tumblr is banning adult content

https://staff.tumblr.com/post/180758987165/a-better-more-positive-tumblr

Tumblr is banning adult visual content from 17th December 2018.

What this means for photographic and fine art (drawings, paintings arc.) erotica and nude content on that site remains to be seen, but it's a sad day for artistic freedom when the junk in the gutter dictates what you might hang on a wall.

It's disappointing. It's amazing in this day and age that so much fuss still is made about erotic content. It's go to hurt Tumblr. It shouldn't be hard to create something to take its place.

It'll be interesting to see how it pans out. In effect, they've said that nearly every artist in history is no better than a child pornographer, because they dare to show "the female presenting nipple."

It's indicative of the times - don't bother fixing the leak in the basement where there shit gets in, just take down all the walls so artists can't hang their stuff anymore. What's sad is that people have got such very short memories.

Yeah and a lot of people's livelihoods will be affected. I do hope something replaces tumblr sooner rather than later.

There are a lot of tumblr blogs I have come across with under age people and animals. I report them, but they are still there weeks, even months later. Or they have been deactivated, but a new one shows up by the same name with deactivated appended.

I don't even go looking for them, they appear in other blogs I follow, which I then unfollow. I will miss the legal blogs out there for sure.

Some have been an inspiration for several stories.

I understand them wanting to eliminate illegal content, obviously, but I'm also curious how this is going to pan out for them. Playboy eliminated full nudity for a time, now they're back in action. Of course, I'm sure someone out there, most likely outside of the US, is working on a alternative Tumblr. A lot of us like good, old-fashioned naked women (and men, for some) depicted non-pornographically, in addition to non-nude fine art, etc.

Now I'll pop some popcorn, sit back, and watch.

There's a wrinkle in their small print that I'll be watching - as I run a drawing blog there.

Erotic "illustrations" apparently, will be allowed, but not photographs - it seems bots can't properly parse a drawing or something. I'll find out, soon enough. Carry on as if nothing's happened, and see how low their radar runs. It won't make much difference to my follower base there, it's only tiny.

"Adult content primarily includes photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts. "

By my reading of that policy, drawings of nudes would be permitted, but not drawings of sex.

Whether it will be enforced that way is anybody's guess. It looks as if their adult image recognition software is... not good... and IME from other sites, enforcement is often inconsistent with the published policy, because training human operatives for consistency is also hard.

It's the old porn vs erotica debate, driven by advertisers and moral hypocrisy. I thought this shit had all been sorted out in the seventies; to see it go around nearly fifty years later is truly depressing. It'll be book burning next; people have such very short memories. It's just sad making.

I think I'll go write some erotica, to cheer myself up (you've met Juliette ;)).

The debate on Tumblr has nothing to do with morality. It has to do with the simple fact that it is the largest sanctuary of free porn and the hard core porn industry wants their ad dollars back

It's still reflective of a double standard. America has a significant porn industry, but the platform owners, in this case Apple (because at cause, Tumblr is knee-jerking the Apple app ban), are dictating what customers can and can't access. What's hitting Tumblr content makers hard is that over the years, Tumblr has allowed a well curated and tasteful arena of adult content, which is a step apart from junk porn, to evolve. Instead of fixing the problem (ie, eliminate the paedophilia and hate-crime content at point of entry) they're about to implement a global, catch-all ban of adult content. That's censorship, and that's a corporate someone dictating what is "acceptable" or not - that's their morality, not mine. Of course there's Ad dollars involved, but not porn ad dollars, I wouldn't have thought - from reading the commentary, it's the corporate dollar leading the charge, not the porn industry.

You obviously have not spent much time on Tumblr... Hardest porn you can think of including pushing the boundaries of illegal if not so. And no age verification systems in place. Everything your mind can think of. Tumblr says they control it but they don't. They can't or they won't. I think they are being forced now and has little to do with a business choice

And the same media companies that own the porn industry if traced through back doors will lead to companies like Viacom and even Disney

I actually have a Tumblr drawing blog where I post my own amateur content (some of which is explicit), hence my interest in what's happening there. I went to Tumblr precisely because it did have well curated, intelligent, tasteful erotica blogs.

Sure, it's got endless, mindless porn garbage in which I have zero interest and just block regularly. It's that crap that should be simple to identify and eliminate. It's the impact on the erotica and the artistic content which is the sad bit. Which is why my opening comment was, "it's a rerun of the old erotica-porn debate." That this is still going on in 2018, fifty years on, is, I suggest, a reflection of a moral swing in society, and a knee jerk reaction.

It should not be so hard for Tumblr to implement proper content moderation. It's a cop-out to say it's just too hard, we can't do it, so we'll just ban nipples instead.

I don't see any evidence at all that this is being driven by the porn industry and its desire to get money for its wares. That industry has no pull whatsoever with legislatures or with the owner of Tumblr, I imagine. The impetus for this comes from elsewhere.

It's too bad, because as EB points out there is a lot of erotica out there that has found a home on Tumblr, and now it has no home. There are ways of dealing with illegal content like child porn that don't involve banning all adult content from Tumblr, but people today seem amenable to drastic solutions.

I think I will continue using Tumblr until my favorite blogs disappear. Possibly they won't remove historical posts right away and we can milk it for awhile. Some of the blogs I encounter have posts that go back two years.

Yes, I'm going to wait and see. Their technology seems to be half-baked, so I'm curious to see how it's all going to work. The idea of subversive drawing content that the bots can't read is kinda fun. Alternatively, we get lots of sexy backs and legs, and fuck with them. "Hey, Staff, this image complies with your rules, show me where it doesn't."

What's happening now, these last few days, is folk are re-blogging all of the historical art, full of nudes from gallery walls, reinforcing the point that it's stupid. The tastefulness factor on my dash has gone up ten-fold (oh, all right, I follow some raunchy blogs too, but not a single "see sexy girls here, just for you," garbage site from Russia). That's the other factor, of course, the worst of the porn gutter isn't flowing from America. The fascist stuff sure as hell is, though. They're not stopping that, from what I can see. Double standards, as far as the eye can see. And ugly cat meme blogs.

Not sure because for a little bit they were flagging content. Problem was they flagged their own post announcing this bullshit. If I get banned after the 17th may tumblr Rot In Hell.

and there is absolutely no nudity on my blog ( I don’t allow it ) , just whaletails and a few upskirts , ok there may be a few pics with a very slight hint of crack but that’s it

Nudity’s fine - just not my thing

EB drawings

The Tumblr bot isn't super clever, though.

These drawings of mine got flagged (note: shameless self promotion):

and these didn't:

Conclusion: the bot can "see" more naturalistic images but gets thrown by jagged lines and unusual outline shapes, and can't get its little optical pixel thingie around charcoal. The subversive in me says, "introduce more chaos into my drawings and see what happens."

On this basis, maybe 5% - 10% of my blog will get censored. That's not so bad, given that many artistic models and creators will have huge chunks of their Tumblr photographic content shut down completely.

Now that's interesting

The Tumblr adult content search bot is doing multiple runs through the blogs.

About a twenty or so of my drawings were tagged for "review" (ie: adult content, to be suppressed on 17th December) several days ago, but roughly half of those are no longer tagged. Tumblr must be fine-tuning the algorithm, and with my drawing content at least, allowing more to survive.

I wonder if the photographic blogs are seeing something similar. More of my drawings might survive than I thought.

Do you expect to set up an alternative medium for your work? Have you got something picked out?

This seems like a really dumb decision to me. I think Tumblr will suffer. Why will people want to use it?
