I thought I had somewhat of a chance until Scories posted the line-up a few days ago. I saw I was 8th and knew it was over. Kind of killed the roller coaster ride for me. Of course Congrats to the winners! Was a pretty good contest overall, just anti-climaxtic knowing I was out of it.

This was my first contest, and I guess I really don't understand the process. I was second a couple days ago, but I lost more than 200 votes overnight and my score went down, while several people who had lower ratings went up. I knew about the sweeps, but didn't know they swept 25% of your votes.
I didn't enter with any expectations of winning, though I'll admit I thought I might have a chance as it got closer to the deadline; rather, I entered to prove to myself I could finish a story on a deadline. I accomplished that, so i'm happy. I read two of the three winners, and they were both excellent stories. Congrats to everyone who entered. Great writing from everyone.

When your score goes down after sweeps, it's probably an indication that you have some overzealous fans who are either multi-voting your story, or leaving low votes on competitors and thus getting all their votes swept for shenanigans.
Contest sweeps always cut to the bone, and 20-35% is actually the norm. My thought is that they search deeper into the IP octets, attempting to remove multi-votes coming from people with dynamic IPs. Unfortunately, that probably removes a lot of legitimate votes, but what can you do with a completely anonymous internet poll?
One thing that was effective for me was adding a note at the end of my story not only asking for votes, but also asking readers to only vote once, and not to down-vote other competitors. Ever since I started doing that, my score almost never goes down during sweeps, and the number of swept votes has dropped noticeably.
Never underestimate your readers' willingness to resort to shenanigans to help you win. But, if you tell them not to, enough seem to honor your wishes to play fair that it makes a difference when the vote Hoover comes around.
