Poetry in song

My favorite double entendre of all time: "I've got a sweet little angel, I love the way she spreads her wings."

Nice. Hadn't heard that in a while. But speaking of double entendres, I read your poetry after reading unexpected praise of it nearby from JAMESBJOHNSON. Piqued my curiosity, and I'm glad it did. You're very good. Before I was done I realized I had carpet bombed you with fives.

Well, thank you , theognis. And to think that JBJ and I had just had a couple of scraps on other threads. I'm glad you liked my poems; they're not for everyone. I'm a big fat anachronism, and in my musical tastes as well, I'm afraid.

You're welcome, AH. I think I've felt like an anachronism my whole life, so I have no problem with your being one, or with your poetry. I think I might have been happier as a caveman, after all. But I often like intentional anachronisms in poetry, or music, and sometimes even unintentional ones, so I guess I'm perfectly suited to be in your audience.

I love both versions, it's interesting how the two versions evoke different feelings and images. How you say (or in this case sing) something really does matter.

Entirely agree - I listen to both regularly, in slightly different moods.

Sly Stone, In Time --

Killer tune. Not great poetry, but better than your average pop song lyrics:

There's a mickie in the tastin' of disaster
In time you get faster
(In time)
Harry Hippie is a waste as if
He hasta procrastanatin'

Something moving in the brain of a doer
In time feel a little newer
(In time)
I switched from coke to pep and I'm a connoisseur
Um hum
(About time)

'Cause there's a method in the madness of the thinkin'
In time, oh, we oughta
(In time)
It seems the best of all the sadness is a sinkin'
In time muddy water
(In time)

And there's a wreck yard in the mind of a quitter
In time gonna get bitter
(In time)
He don't give a heck or is he blind and makin' litter
In time gonna need a baby sitter
(About time)

I felt so good I told the leader how to follow
In time get down
(In time)
So glad I could not feel indeed so very hollow
No need to follow

Insecurities attracting every flirter
In time, yeah, it's murder
(In time)
If you don't mind please why give slack to a deserter
(About time)

Well, well, well, well, well, oh, day light is all I see
Ah, stay light away from me
See you tomorrow noon
(Miss me, I'll see you soon)

I told you it's not the teachin' it's the learnin'
In time don't need no burnin'
(In time)
And when I mold you to start reachin' in the mornin'
In time

Well, well, there's a feelin', oh, so real in every human
On time
(About time)
There's a reelin' when you don't know what you're doing
In time
(About time)
Hey

Stay around and get a show
Hey, hey, hey, hey don't you know
(In time)
Two years too long to wait
Two words will get it straight
(In time)
You see an answer in time
(In time)
And that ain't nothin', I'm a dancer

Two years too long to wait
Oh, two words will get it straight
Two years too long to wait
Two words will get it straight
(Yeah sure, yeah sure, yeah)

Two years too long to wait
Two words will get it straight
(In time, in time)
Two years too long to wait
Two words will get it straight

The Heart of the Matter

I got the call today, I didn't want to hear
but I knew that it would come.
An old, true friend of ours was talkin' on the phone,
she said you found someone.
And I thought of all the bad luck
and the struggles we went through
and how I lost me and you lost you.
What are those voices outside love's open door,
make us throw off our contentment
and beg for something more?

I'm learning to live without you now,
but I miss you sometimes.
The more I know, the less I understand,
all the things I thought I knew, I'm learning again.
I've been tryin' to get down
to the heart of the matter
but my will gets weak
and my thoughts seem to scatter
but I think it's about forgiveness,
forgiveness
even if, even if you don't love me anymore.

These times are so uncertain
There's a yearning undefined
People filled with rage
We all need a little tenderness
How can love survive in such a graceless age?
The trust and self-assurance that lead to happiness
They're the very things we kill, I guess
Pride and competition
cannot fill these empty arms
And the work I put between us doesn't keep me warm.

I'm learning to live without you now
But I miss you, baby
The more I know, the less I understand
All the things I thought I'd figured out
I have to learn again
I've been trying to get down
to the heart of the matter
But everything changes
and my friends seem to scatter
But I think it's about forgiveness
Forgiveness
Even if, even if you don't love me anymore.

There are people in your life
who've come and gone,
They let you down,
you know they've hurt your pride.
You better put it behind you,
'cause life goes on.
You keep carryin' that anger,
it'll eat you up inside baby.

I've been trying to get down
to the heart of the matter
But everything changes
and my friends seem to scatter
But I think it's about forgiveness
Forgiveness
Even if, even if you don't love me.

I've been tryin' to get down
to the heart of the matter
because the flesh will get weak
and the ashes will scatter.
So, I'm thinkin' about forgiveness,
forgiveness
even if, even if you don't love me.

Forgiveness, forgiveness,
forgiveness, forgiveness,
forgiveness, forgiveness,
even if, even if you don't love me.
