Of course they can, hell they can even win, just go back to Nude day contest. In fact, last minute entries in categories that tend to be low voted (number of votes, not score) can actually be said to have an advantage

I respect that the contest is as fair as can be done, I am not that rabid to feel it is totally invalid. Personally I merely look beyond the score to what people have said to keep it in context. I received a lot of great compliments on my story. That is what really matters to me, that it was good enough to find a place in a reader's experience, it encourages me to keep improving.
Competing with other good writers is a welcome challenge and experience. I hope to win one day, that would be nice, but if folks actually vote down other people's writing, to win a contest or skew its results, well, shame on them. As for the rest, my applause.

As usual, the sweeps brought up the scores on my stories--one a significant full 2 points. And they are both pretty hot--at least for now.
It's rather amusing; it's also a sad commentary on who's voting what--and probably why--and just won't give up the silly game.

A total of 62 stories have had their votes adjusted, with 92 sweeps resulting in a new score that day which is higher than before and 12 sweeps resulting in a new score that day which is lower. There were a total of 1,008 votes swept, being an average of 16 per swept story. The maximum number of votes swept for a single story was 188. (Figures based on toplists, and may not be totally accurate).

It was for me. Before the sweep I was at 4.87 and 764 votes. After I was at 4.80 and 415 votes.
The 4.83 above was a brief resting point as the score dropped. I assume Late Valentine and Senior Center are now sitting above 4.80.

You don't have to assume the most current rating. It's what's on your submissions page. These records list my "Homeless Heart" at 4.43. It's at 4.62 now after the last sweeps. I presume others have experienced as drastic a change up or down before the official tally was over. This is more for those who habitually dance on the head of a pin on who ranked where after the end of a contest. And wouldn't be needed if the gamesters just stopped playing their voting games.

The story with a 4.87 rating and 750 votes does not even place and as always a SF story with less than 200 pre sweep votes takes first place. (which for the record was exactly what happened in V-day 2012 to my story) Guess the "Iron man" must have been cheating as well, right?
Even better, DG Hear has just won his 3rd straight V-day contest all with non erotic entries.
Last contest we had a romance story lose almost half its votes so it could win and nude day we had a last minute (literally) story with less than 100 votes win.
Oh, this is fucking hilarious. Anyone here who doesn't think these things are fixed please PM me, I have awesome deals on some prime real estate!

I know how to get my most up to date score, but the pages of others are only updated once per day, from what I can tell. The author pages for the three winners shows their scores before this morning's sweeps.

Yep, there's going to be no way for you to know anyone's "point of winners determination" score except your own. That's just the way it is. And with all the cheating going on (or screwy sweep formula), that's the way it's going to stay.

I see no reason to believe a fix is in. it seems more trouble than it's worth, and there has never been a lot of rationality to average votes. I constantly see 4.90 stories that I find unreadable and 3.8 stories that are brilliant. Stories aren't voted on by an academy but by readers, few of whom read all the stories or even want or expect the same things from stories. I knew all that when I entered the contest. Given that my story was #1 for most of the contest I confess my hopes got up, but I always knew this was a risk as I saw the same thing happen to you last year.
