does anyone know why on occasion when trying to access someones tumblr page you need to login? most tumblr's don't require it, but on occasion...

Tumblr has to try and filter content to protect those that either shouldn't or do not want to see the content. If the content is sexually explicit then you must be logged in to view it as a kind of age verification.

I don't know who's definition of the word 'try' they are using. Type your favorite porn flavor followed by 'tumblr' into a search engine, and it's rare to find a page that requires a username and password. The very few pages that I've seen that require anything have been posted to lit or similar sites by people wondering why authentication is required.

It could be that Tumblr offers a privacy setting to blog creators that makes it so you can't view the content without being logged in on the app or directly through the site. There's another setting that makes your blog invisible to anyone that isn't on your followers list but I think that's only if you have a secondary blog which has limited functions.

It's probably people wanting to control who sees their blog by making sure only logged in tumblr users can access it.

this seems to be the case, although the person in control of the tumblr in question indicated there does not seem to such a privacy function. any ideas on how to undo that function? for the person who's tumblr it is...

There is, it was all there when creating the blog. The user can go into their account settings, not through the app. I had to login through the website. I logged in and went to my settings to find these options.

In account settings on the right hand side of the page is the primary blog and listed below all secondary blogs. Once there, click the blog to be edited and it will show the name of the blog, user name, theme options etc. scroll down to the bottom and there are three Privacy options:

1. Allow logged-out users to see this blog
Your blog will be available to the public at [name].tumblr.com

2. Allow this blog to appear in search results
This applies to searches on Tumblr as well as external search engines, like Google or Yahoo.

3.Flag this blog as adult-oriented
Learn more about what this means.

Check and uncheck as necessary.

This is a really old post, but I'm sure you know by now, there is a setting that you can make it where you have to be logged into view it. Even if it's SFW (which mine is), it can be made that you have to login to access. I think mine is that way because I don't like showing up in searches and I don't like stalkers. I at least want stalkers to have to go to the trouble of creating an account and logging in.
