Welcome to the Authors' Hangout Archive.

The purpose of this archive is to provide links to topics covered here, by authors of this site. Several of us felt it a shame that such a wealth of resources and knowledge were buried way back in the annuls of the AH.

This archive focuses predominantly on threads and topics relating to writing, or issues directly related to Literotica, however, there are a few notable threads here which members of the AH thought worthy of archiving. These include topics which can affect many of us, including: depression, relationships, sexuality, and the need to have some fun!

Within this archive, there will also be answers to many of the frequently asked questions that come up here, at the AH - as well as links to the many threads which answer those questions.

Please do not post comments in this thread.

If you have any suggestions for, or comments about, the AH Archive, please feel free to post in the AH Thread Library - Discussion Thread . You can also PM the AH Thread Librarian directly. For those of you new to this forum, please read the Welcome Authors! Please Read sticky, at the top of the AH, for links to useful information and tips on navigating both the Author’s Hangout and Literotica, as a whole.

At this point, a couple of credits have to be given for the ideas and inspiration behind this project. Sweetnpetite came up with the original idea, and both she and Tatelou took a lot of inspiration from the BDSM Library. Thanks to the BDSM Librarian, S’lara, for your encouragement, support, and Tatelou's blatant ripping of your format. ;) Also, thank you to the many AH’ers who have helped in this task, by providing suggestions and links.

We hope you find this archive useful, informative and fun.

[This thread is under construction. If you have any ideas or suggestions on topics or threads to be added, please post in the Discussion thread. Please do NOT post here.]

Everyone knows this (;) ), but, Avatars are the pictures which appear with our IDs, next to every post we make on the forums, here at Literotica. To be able to activate avatars, you need to have made 100 posts.

I don't care what the thread is, how serious the subject, be it politics, love, writing, or any other topic you care to name, I can guarantee that you won't get 20 posts without some two or more contributors going off in to a discussion of someone's AV. Depression

There have been many threads and discussions on this board about depression and ways of attempting to cope with it. It has been argued many times that perhaps the creative mind is more inclined to suffering from depression, but that discussion will no doubt run and run. Editing/Editors

The editing process often takes longer than the initial writing of the story, and is crucial to achieving that polished finished product. Editing isn't discussed that much at the AH itself, but it does come up from time to time. Here's some links to threads discussing editing, both here at the Author's Hangout and over at the Editing Forum. Also tips on how to find a good editor.

FAQs

This is a list of questions that are frequently asked on the AH:

How long does it take for a story to post? - At the present time, it can take between 1-2 weeks for your story to appear once it's been submitted. If you click on the preview link of your submission, then you are sending your story back to the end of the queue, and you have to start your wait all over again.

My story has been rejected - why? - There are numerous reasons for a story to be rejected on Lit. Usually there will be a message that will hint at the reason. It could be grammar, punctuation, improper use of dialogue, paragraphs are too big, mention of underage sex, etc. When in doubt, you can post here or in the Editors' Forum and someone will probably volunteer to help you solve the mystery.

Can I refer to sex before 18 in a flashback? - Only if there are no details provided whatsoever. You can say "So and so lost her virginity or had sex"... and that's about all you can do.

Is there a clique in the Author's Hangout?
- Depends on who you ask. Some say no, some say yes. You just have to decide that one for yourself.

Why are trolls? - Because some people have nothing better to do than to ruin your day.

A story or author I read earlier has now vanished. Why? - Periodically, authors will pull their stories from Lit. This can be due to personal reasons or because of publication elsewhere.

How do I find a particular story? - Search for it using Literotica's search feature. Sometimes, you might have success asking here or on the Story Feedback forum.

Why does Og wear a cake on his head? - because he's got a bald spot underneath and Henry VIII didn't have one.

How do I edit a posted story? - Simply submit the new version as you submitted the old one, only adding the word "EDITED" to the title (ex. "My Sexy Firefighter Ch. 03 - EDITED") so that Lit knows to replace the old text with the new text. They will then replace the original text with the new text. Your story will retain its previous voting score and views.

Guess The Voice - AH Author Challenges

The idea for these challenges was initially spawned from a thread on the AH discussing Voice and whether or not we felt our voice in our writing was distinctive and easily recognisable to others. Impressive suggested it would be a fun, and perhaps informative, venture for authors here at the AH to write a short piece on a set theme, and then for a designated person to receive each of the pieces by PM, and post them blind on the AH, for others to try to work out who had written which piece.

Here's links to all the threads pertaining to the voice challenges:

Characters, Plots, the basics in plain language.

A place called Unclean Arts,:) , It seems appropriate in this company.:D

Firstly, let me throw out a somewhat imprecise working definition of a screenplay character:

character - an artificial, aesthetic construct that simulates a human life for the purpose of entertainment, or for the exploration of dramatic, moral, or aesthetic issues.

And!
Myth, Symbol, and Philosophy

Theme: The Soul of Story
Understanding and applying theme to your own screenplays is essential to creating work of impact, relevance, and duration -- and indeed, the line between competence and greatness.

Submerged: The Story Beneath the Story
A detailed examination of the role that symbols and symbolic meaning plays in screenplay storytelling, via a thorough look at the many layers of theme and idea contained in "Alien."

Know Thyself, or How to Avoid Becoming a Hack
Only writing that originates from self-knowledge and experience can approach greatness.
:D

How long after winning a contest before I'm eligible?

Quote from Reject Reality in Winter Holiday 2014 thread

A quick note that I got an answer from Laurel about eligibility.

The beginning of the six months is the month in which you are announced the winner.

In order for a story from a previous winner to be eligible, the contest must start more than six months later. It's whole months, and the month in which you win counts as one. So, if you win in July, you're not eligible for any contest beginning in August, September, October, November, or December.

Using this year's dates:

Valentine's Win: Not eligible for Earth Day or Nude Day.
Earth Day Win: Not eligible for Nude Day or Summer Lovin'.
Nude Day Win: Not eligible for Summer Lovin', Halloween, or Winter Holiday.
Summer Lovin' Win: Not eligible for Halloween, Winter Holiday, or Valentine's
Halloween Win: Not eligible for Winter Holiday, Valentine's, or Earth Day.
Winter Holiday win: Not eligible for Valentine's or Earth Day.

**

Quote from Laurel, same thread:

We've never had three special contests in a 6-month period as far as I know, and AFAIK we've never had an issue where someone was precluded from winning in such a scenario.

We could restate the rule so you're excluded from winning two consecutive special contests in a row (which is its intention). Would that clarify things?

newbies: terms and acronyms

[if improved, this may become sticky material]

AH – Author’s Hangout, a forum n Literotica. Moderated for your convenience and to keep sometimes-unfriendly elements from turning threads into a shouting match.

BDSM – Bondage, Discipline, Sadism and Masochism. Sometimes the DS is also taken to include Dominance and Submission. Too complex to define here, and means different things to different people, but in a story it generally means someone’s getting tied up or spanked.

BTB – Burn The Bitch. Generally a story in which a manipulative or otherwise nasty female “gets what’s coming to her” which can take a variety of forms from humiliation to outright ruin to death. Some of these may be moralistic tales of the Crime Doesn’t Pay sort, but in general they are exercises in pay back wrapped in misogyny. Generally seen in LW (q.v.).

Cuck – A cuckold. Strictly speaking this is any male who has a cheating wife. Here, often a male character who allows to encourages his partner to have sex with others (often while watching), generally to feel humiliation, but sometimes to objectify the partner. Standard (but contentious) fare in LW (q.v.)

EC – Erotic Couplings, the catchall category for generally erotic stories that don’t cater to any single specific fetish.

GB – General Board, a forum on Literotica. Often contentious; shouting matches are generally ok here.

GM – Gay Male (story or category). GF is not used as a parallel acronym and might be understood as girlfriend.

HEA – Happily Ever After. Describes a story that ends on a positive note with long term prospects of happiness, generally for two or more people; most often a successful relationship, but can be wealth, endless orgasms, or anything the characters desired for.

IR – interracial. Generally black on white or white on Asian, but could be extended to alien species, etc.

Jill – female masturbation. Derived from jack off, male masturbation. Presumably Jack and Jill needed the pail of water to wash up afterwards.

Lit - Literotica. lower case: literature, as in "erotic lit".

LW – Loving Wives, a category for stories here at Literotica. Known for an angry and insulting readership who are very divided on what the category is really about.

MC – Mind Control (category). Includes stories in which some magical or technological device turns someone into a veritable puppet for someone else’s amusement. Essentially a variation on NonCon for a specific fetish.

MF, MMF, lots of M’s and/or F’s – indicates the gender and number of people in a sexual encounter; MFF is one man and two women having sexual experiences together. Sometimes capitalization or slashes indicate dominance and submission, so Mf or M/f would signal a dominant male and submissive female. If all the letters are capital, dominance is not implied.

NonCon, sometimes NC – Non-consent. A category here at Literotica with an especially weakly defined set of boundaries; it doesn’t include outright rape, unless the victim enjoys or learns to enjoy the process. It also covers Reluctance, the “I shouldn’t but, I want to, but I must not give in. but…” that is the mainstay of erotic Romance, but ends up here if it’s too dark for Romance. Better described as “very dark but ultimately after-the-fact-consenting stuff that doesn’t fly elsewhere.”

Plot bunny. An idea for a plot in a story. They are everywhere, but can be hard to catch.

PM – Private message.

RAAC – Reconciliation At All Costs. A story in which a partner, even if abused or treated poorly, works to restore the relationship no matter how personally painful. Generally seen in LW (q.v.).

Stroke – masturbate

Stroker – a story, generally short and often plot free, written to get the reader to orgasm without having much other purpose.

Unrecognized acronyms often refer to authors active on AH, and at first it can be unclear who they mean.
