Shit!

18 months ago my son-in-law's employers went into administration owing millions of pounds. They were saved by another company because they had full order books for years to come.

Today? He was sent home early. The electricity company cut off the power because their bills hadn't been paid for six months. There is no money in the company's account to pay the staff for last month's work, when most have been working overtime for maximum hours to meet the orders. October and November are peak hours for overtime to get product out for Christmas.

Will my son-in-law get paid - anything? Will the company be bought out again? This means hundreds of local families will have a disastrous Christmas. They won't be paid redundancy for at least two months. Technically they're not employed yet so they can't claim unemployment pay. The staff have been called to a meeting Monday morning in the foyer which might have enough daylight to see each other. But the signs aren't good. Many other suppliers are owed money. None of this was known to the staff until this afternoon.

Was this, I wonder, a compounding of "oh, we'll pay it next week" or a bit more serious ? My son went 'bang' because he was owed a comparatively large sum of money. There should be a few Rules about this sort of thing. . .

Good Luck,

Food allergies are no fucking joke and the older I get, the reactions are getting worse. Getting old can kiss my ass.

And modern food production is more chemistry than farming, eh?

I accidentally drank some crappucino that had artificial sweeteners and got so sick, this was on top of peanut butter (I shouldn't eat peanuts but I know how much peanut butter I can handle without needing Benedryl...) This is why I never eat processed foods. You never know what's in that shit.

Are massive doses of acidophilus any help? They help with mine, taken before or just after I eat soy, but I don't have peanut allergy.

Never tried that but I'm Willing to. The peanut thing's a sensitivity not a true allergy. Soy is hard to avoid. Much harder than peanuts. My sympathies.

Same with the soy, a sensitivity. I buy Primadophalus Optima in the refrigerated organic area at a local supermarket but have also found great results with shelf stabile versions of multiple strain caplets from the drugstore, 15 to 50 billion CFU.

I think the more strains are in it the better and the higher potency helps. I take one about ten minutes before eating something I suspect will have soy protein or oil, or as soon as possible after if I start to get sick because I unwittingly ate something wrong.

Goodbye to a cat

This afternoon we had to take our elderly cat to the veterinary practice for the last time. She had been increasingly unhappy since the weekend and dehydrated for the last two days - drinking every five minutes.

We were sad to have her put to sleep but even aggressive intervention wouldn't have kept her alive for more than a few days and she would have been in pain for all that time.

It wasn't surprising that she had come to the end of her life. Our best estimate of her age is either 19 or 20 years old, the oldest that any of our cats had reached. Until about three months ago she was still fairly active but her back legs had been gradually failing to work when she wanted to climb. During the last week the legs had become wobbly as she walked on a level surface.

She was a small tortoiseshell cat that always looked like a kitten, and played like one with first our children and recently with our grandchildren. She has been part of the family for so long that she is going to leave a large gap in our lives.

Having been there and done that, I offer my sympathy.
It really ain't fun.

Thank you Magica and Handley.

It's been a bad week.

1. Daughter's live-in boyfriend walked out on Friday after four years of being the house-husband. Our six year old grandson was very attached to the now ex-boyfriend and upset that the departure happened without even a goodbye.

2. Son-in-law's employers shut down without warning leaving him in limbo, technically still employed but unpaid. On Monday they were told that until administrators were appointed nothing would change but administrators would be appointed on Wednesday. It's Friday and now they are told administrators won't be appointed until NEXT Wednesday at the earliest.

3. The long term family cat had to be put to sleep yesterday before she died in pain. She had been a family pet for the whole of the grandchildren's lives, and nearly half of our daughters' lives. They are all finding it difficult to cope with her absence. So are we.

But - the sun is shining. I won 25 on the lottery - not enough to pay the vet's bill but at least something.

That is a great deal to have thrown at you all at once. I have seen little boys have to deal with the loss of a father figure like your grandson is and it is horrible that the live in boyfriend did it that way. The work situation for your son is difficult and I hope it will resolve quickly. The loss of the furry family member is one I know, several times over. I hope the sun will smile on your family fully in time. *hug*

The sun is shining on the calm sea. The temperature is about 9 C with little wind.

There are advantages to living by the sea. But I should get outside and wash the salt off my windows. It's obscuring my view.

I spent thanksgiving in my underwear. I didn't get dressed, didn't leave the apartment, didn't do much of anything but cook, eat, and watch stuff on my TV.

Living alone does have advantages. It also makes you a nudist.

Glad you had a relaxing Turkey Day.

I know that every category has its purists. No need to start a whole new thread about it. This feels more like an isolated blurt.

I submitted a Lesbian Sex story about two straight girls who fall in love with each other. They both have sexual histories, and as they bond they discuss them. There is some dialog about blow jobs. This morning I found this comment waiting for me. It was upsetting.

Quote:
I'm a lesbian. I come to this section to read erotica about two women. That's it. You have an extensive and graphic description of blow jobs in here. Why would you do that? I liked the story - real characters, well-written...but that stopped me from reading. It's also not respectful to the category, so not respectful to lesbians. You come into this category to use us for sexual gratification and then explicitly describe blow jobs. Please rethink this.

The "Best Before " date on a tinned meat pie got me warming the oven (powered by Gas, no less), and watching the TV with one eye and the timer with the other (which was tricky with these glasses). Then I decided to cook the apple pie whilst I had a warm cooker.
Then I noticed the smell of gas.
I've had to call out the 'Gas emergency' service who, of course, said they had to tell me to turn off the gas at the main inlet.
As my house is heated by a Gas boiler, the man had better turn up soon.

PS
Somewhat to my surprise the gas man comethed with remarkable speed.
He wandered about with his magic [electronic] wand and pronounced the place safe, so everything gaseous was turned back on; including the Cooker (aka 'incinerator'].
So far, so good.

WTF? I share something important to me, I tell you I'm scared about something and your response is . . . nothing. We've talked about this. It's okay if you can't think of something to say. Patting my hand or, even better, a hug, a show of comfort would be a good response. I finally get up and clear my dishes and you get up and walk out of the room. I don't understand.
