Tripe, Nonsense and Balderdash

Leaning In

I thought I knew
how to breathe
you suck it in (up)
and blow it out (off)

easy
simple
mostly
automatic

until
it isn't
until
you can't
until

love
lust
beauty
anxiety

smash you up against the lockers
and there's a knot in your back
an elephant on your chest
and nothing
nothing
else matters
except what you now
simply cannot live without

and that
is when you lean in
gasping

Oh! Fabulous start ! Welcome back (or if not back, then welcome to posting again  )

Thank you Annie, I'm reading a book on vulnerability and shame, Daring Greatly by Brene Brown, I'm thinking of doing a series inspired by the book, if my muse will cooperate.

Love on Loan

I don't need you
to belong to me

lend me
your ear

tell me
your story

paint the picture
of worlds I've never seen

your non-fiction
and your fantasy

put a stamp
in my memories

then you return
to your self-assigned spot

knowing
I'm a re-reader

Balls to the Wall

I watch you
running into walls
you have no wish
to climb or
raze
and wonder
what it is
you're trying to free
or break
which will give first
and what it'll take

No More Mr. Nice Guy

All the things you don't say
in an attempt
to spare my feelings
and your ears

Say them
say them like you mean them
I grow weary
of misinterpreting your silence

I need to know
where it is exactly
I'm standing
before I can navigate

wade through honest
rough terrain
with the accompanying
twists, turns, bumps and bruises

to let us know
we're getting somewhere
that there's a somewhere
to get to

unlike this artificial landscape
where everything is pretty
but feels stagnant
and smells of bullshit

Precious Pain

You're a pain so familiar
that it's only in your absence
that the intensity is truly felt
the momentary surcease
the unfettered beat of heart
the breath that doesn't catch
the reminder
that body and mind
function with
or without you
and then the ache settles back in
and I sigh in relief

A nod to Mellisa Ethridge for the title, and yeah I'm early, but I hate being late and tomorrow's a busy day.

Meat Market Shares

Back and forth trading
of words, glances
faux casual touches
are all part of the
futures racket
but on this floor
everyone's buying high
or selling out

1-8

Tongue licks and
flicks along
the hard lines
and soft
curves of you
tasting and
tracing
your manscape
fingerlings
of color flash
through the dense
overgrowth
surrounding
your majestic wood

Trilling
a tune from Pan's flute
I hear an ursine counterpoint
rumble
from your throat
thrill
as the melody
of our natures
builds
toward crescendo
drink up
the sound
as the cycle of life
sluices
down
to be savored
like the sacrament
it is

Handles without Bags

We've all got baggage
we slap labels on it
to remind us
where we came from

a hopeless chest
we started packing
before we knew
we'd anywhere to go

it drags us
unceasingly
to seedy places
where nothing ever grows

until the day
we wrestle the damn thing
to the ground
and pry the handle away

we have to be careful though
those chests are sneaky
if we try to bury them
they resurface and reattach

it's only by opening them
in the light of someone else's eyes
that they and their contents
once so monstrously heavy

are transmuted
into cups
from which we can drink
unconditional love

Sins of Omission

the roar that lies
on the other side
of silence

your trembling
breath
on my neck

one
unspoken word
thrust through lips

The Scent of a Poet

I have a paper garden
watered with ink
lit with fiery phrases
I press what blossoms
into your hands

1-12

A Game of Catch

Requires you to open your hand
and let go the ball
for a short while
until it is thrown back
with the hope
that you'll catch it

Honestly,
if you asked
I would tell you
to rearrange your wording like so

Honestly,
if you asked
I would tell you
to rearrange your wording like so

Rearranging my words would be like rearranging my drawers (not to be confused with underwear)
it'd take me forever to find where I put things
and possibly leave me chaffed

Closet Monster

You don't scare me

peering out
from behind a door
only slightly ajar

the noise you make
may have me
sweating and panting

but my only fear
is that you'll pull the door shut
with me on the other side

1-16

Needful Things

I don't need you
to woo me
or to soothe me

take the best of my best
and the worst of my worst

quit trying to game me
and quit trying to blame me

for loving yours

Limitless

I have my limits
my limitations

and love

which recognizes
neither
