There are some people who will tell you that, yes, but I disagree. I think superfluous terminology clutters up fantasy stories. At best it makes them sound just frivolous and trite, and at worst it can make a story downright opaque.

You haven't read enough fantasy stories to understand "weres" in that context is intended to refer to any human/animal shapeshifter. The author wasn't making it up, it's established in other published works.

Laurell K. Hamilton, for example.

You seem really...uptight.
 
And "shapeshifter" is another good word for it -- certainly better than "manimal". :D
