I've never used chuks, nor almost any Asian fighting skills, but the girl with chucks reminds me of what I used to do with 18th century Naval cutlasses. Cutlass swinging was a pre-WWI sport. I think at one time it was considered for the 1908 Olympics. The last time I saw practitioners was at a 1960s Royal Tournament. You couldn't have it as a normal sport because those cutlasses were razor sharp, heavy, and any mistake could mean losing a limb.

I learned quarterstaff (as in Robin Hood and Little John) when in the Boy Scouts. Again, it was far more dangerous than the formal sports now because there were really no rules at all except please don't kill your opponent...

I seem to have a talent for weapons (huge surprise, right? ), but my favorite so far is the bo staff....the six-foot stick, basically. So far I'm fairly proficient with nunchuks, the bo staff, and the tonfa...and I just started with sais (pics below), but I like weapons VERY much. :D

Tonfa (we use a pair):

Sai (also used as a pair):

Kamas (again, a pair...this is the next weapon I learn):

then after that the Katana:

then, and I'm looking forward to these, the Tessen (those are actually daggers, and usually they stick out slightly beyond the fan):

You can get them fairly cheap (practice chuks) from the Century Martial Arts catalog. :)

Nunchucks are illegal for personal use in the state of New Jersey and can only be bought by martial art studios. I would have to go for a long drive to find a pair, if I knew where to look (and I'm quite dense when it comes to finding new places, I need to break that part of my shell [with some new nunchucks! ;) ]).

They're illegal here, too, unless you're a registered martial arts student.

Century sells the foam practice chuks - surely they wouldn't be illegal anywhere - and they're only $7.99 a pair plus shipping. NJ isn't listed as one of the states they can't ship them to.

To be honest, if you've never really used them, you need to start out with the foam ones anyway. You can do some real damage with the wooden or metal ones...I cracked a knuckle pretty badly last year...I still can't wear my wedding ring because it won't fit over that knuckle anymore.

Really. I figured you would have broken on somebody's hard head...

I help teach three section staff and will soon be learning 9 section steel whip. I'm sure there will be an adjustment period (and I am sure I will crack several body parts over that time), but wood would be just fine for me (and my abnormally thick skull ;) ).

I've been mighty tempted. :D

The only damage I've really done to anyone, other than bruises (which are to be expected) was about six months ago when I leg-checked a sparring partner just when she was about to throw a kick - she had trouble walking for a week or so...but it was entirely unintentional.

As my instructor says, though, we're not taking ballet class....it's a martial arts class...people get hurt - like when I broke my wrist back in February.

If you say so...the chuks I have are octagonal, and designed specifically to break bones. They hurt like a motherfucker even with just a light tap, and I've hit myself with them more times than I can count.

I start teaching in the fall - I'm uber excited about it. :)

I knew you'd think I was talking about you.

Damn....seems that I'll have to explain it to you...

See...I was joking around. I didn't think you were talking about me because, frankly, you aren't even on my radar; you just happened to post in the middle of a convo that TGP and I were having. I don't give a shit whether you were talking about me or not. Trust me, your opinion of me isn't something I've ever wasted even two seconds worrying about. I just don't care.

That make it clearer for you?

And...yes, I am a bitch, thanks. :)

Four days without builders or grandchildren = bliss.

Builders are essential; grandchildren are enjoyable; but both are tiring.

The word suppose (and supposed for that matter) doesn't look like a real word to me anymore. It sounds like lazy speech street slang for a more difficult word to pronounce.

The builders are back.

They're removing the render around the house, which is 70 - 80 years old, before repairing the cracks underneath and applying new render.

Two Kango hammers working flat out and my 5 month old grandson is still sleeping peacefully despite the noise and vibration.

...

The builders are still working. Most of the render is off. They're now working on the chimneys.

The burglar alarm company has arrived to remove the external bell so that the render can be taken off underneath it.

Now we need:

1. The heating company to check the gas fire and flue to make sure no loose render went down the chimney.

2. The British Telecom engineer to move and replace the external phone lines.

3. The TV aerial guy (actually one of our local Fire crew) to remove and replace the TV aerial.

4. The leadwork specialist to replace lead flashing.

and 5. There is sure to be at least one other trade involved...

My back went out last night. I was sitting at my computer, and was posting here and elsewhere to pass the time until I went to bed, when I felt a twitch in my back. I didn't think much of it until I got up to get undressed, and standing was difficult. So was getting into bed, and getting up this morning. I didn't dare take a shower with my limited mobility. I couldn't even put on socks...

I have had back problems before (it was an old mattress last time), and this one isn't as bad as before, but it still sucks.
