Mathilda
Nikki wanted to sleep in the hotel, Mathilda would love to sleep in a bed, but she didn't want to be that far from the car. Her backpack was in it, her sack with wool and cotton. That she could do without though. She knew she would survive without her things, but with them it would be easier. Jack would stay. Maybe she should too.
A bit helpless she looked around as Patrick and Sarah started to quarrel. Her needles moved faster as Sarah left.
"I had enough water," she said softly to Jack. "Did you have dinner? There is some on the counter. Add some dried onions and carrots to it, it tastes a lot better that way. Less salty."
Pat followed his daughter.
"I'll sleep here too," Matilda decided. "I'll get the cats."
Slowly she moved into a kneeling position, stretched her back before she stood up and went to the office. At the door to the ladies restroom she paused. Should she go outside, or in here? In here, she decided. She didn't feel safe outside, especially at night, even if Nikki told her there were only some raccoons around. Hovering over the seat, she emptied her bladder. With one of her last wet wipes she cleaned herself. First her face and her hands, then the rest.
Three minutes later she was back in the store room with the cats. She put the box on the ground, put the new one beside it, settled down against the counter and watched momma cat move around.
"I think I'll just call her momma," she whispered.
