Favorite words to use when writing?

I would like to thank a friend of mine for giving me the inspiration for this thread. He knows who he is.


When you are writing your stories, is there a certain word(s) you like to use in your stories?
I like using words like: ascertain, inundate, exponential, facetious, congregate, etc. (just a few examples)

Words have different degrees of meaning. Sometimes I tend to use weaker words to covey what I'm trying to say, not based on my limited vocabulary, but to maintain some simplicity with a reader. It doesn't always work out that way, though. :(

I think the old saying is, "Never use a five dollar word to put your two cents in on something."
 
I like starting sentences with the words "And" or "But." A lot of old school people are against that, but it's becoming more acceptable and I think it makes sense under the write context.

My favorite phrase is "her pussy clenched" when something hot happens.

As for exact words, I'm not sure.

Anything but "she hitched up" So many fucking times in 50 shades that phrase. It drove me nuts.
I like using mons venis and gluteal cleft, just a more clinical way of saying her crotch and but crack!

I tend to do the same thing from time to time stating sentences off with "And" or "But" because chances are the sentence was way too long prior to the conjunction.

It was free on my cable provider and, never having read the book, I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. I will never get those two hours back. I am legit angry at myself for watching the whole thing. I guess I thought it would get better?

On favorite words: I am also guilty of starting sentences with conjunctions. I know I have a bunch of overused words I fall back on but if I could remember what they were, I probably wouldn't use them as much. I know I tend to use "cock" and "cunt" a lot because I don't enjoy many of the euphemisms for genitalia. "penis" and "vagina" sound too clinical to my ear.
 
Agree with 'and' and 'but'.

I use 'soft' a lot to describe sound and/or texture.

Well now, if we're going for an S.A.T. style of word choices: curvaceous and tumultuous are some of my fav.s

Same, only substitute for cock and pussy. Using the word 'cunt' where I grew up would get yah back-handed--and those lessons stuck--but somehow any other swear was acceptable.
That said, my characters tend to overuse phases I tend to overuse like: 'sweet shit' and 'what the un-holy fuck?'
 
Words come. I've used 'writhed' quite a bit. Words go. Now I usually delete it about as soon as I write it, but it still sneaks through.

Words come. I've been using 'glistened' a lot. It's probably time to take control of that one.
 
I like to use as many English words as possible. I hardly ever use foreign words, except to make a point. ;)

I try to keep my word choice simple. If the reader has to use a dictionary to look up a word, it ruins the whole story. I know it does for me, except that it gives me a chance to expand my vocabulary, which is a good thing for a writer. Even though I would probably never use the word in a story.

Words like Tweedle, Nixie, Sockdolager, and Selenotropism to name a few, I would never use.

But, fuck, suck, cock, pussy and ass are words I would use as often as possible to convey what is going on in the story.
 
I use "the" a lot. It may just be my favorite word, to judge by its frequency in my stories. It's dead useful: when you stick it in front of a noun, it says that you're talking about just one thing out of all the similar things you could be talking about. Consider this simple sentence:

He tossed me onto the bed and climbed on top of me.

If it had said "he tossed me onto a bed," then you'd have no idea which bed he tossed me onto; but since it says "the bed," you know very well it's a particular bed, a very special bed, one that has already been mentioned in some previous sentence.

You can't get much more useful than that.

I try to use whatever words best serve the purpose of what I write. This is where a good vocabulary and well compiled and cross-referenced thesaurus come in handy.

My other main principle when it comes to using words involves verbs. I never use a conjugate of "to be" unless any alternative is awkward or my thought can only be made clear by doing so.
 
Some people think I use "like" a lot but I don't 'cause that's like a valley girl thing and I'm from like Denver and like don't say that and stuff.

See what I did there? I used like repletedly and stuff while saying I didn't say it so it was a contraception and stuff.

Lol. Like, I like that. I did that in one of my stories and someone commented critically that it made my character sound like a teenage girl and they gave me , like, a poor rating. I was like, duh! The main character IS, like, a teenage girl. Like, what the heck?

In a business context, sure, but in erotica?

Who's your audience: a legally minded rainwater specialist who goes ballistic, sarcastically, in a church?

I try to avoid repeated usage, to keep my vocabulary plain, and my sentences simple. Unfortunately I can't avoid it all.

_Lynn_ pointed out a while back that I overuse "that," and I've been working to leave it out ever since. I also tend to use "then" as if it were a coordinating conjunction, but it isn't. I'm still working on that one, too.
 
Favourite words?

I have several words I use too often - then, but, when and 'and'.

According to Grammarly I use many more words they describe as 'unique' than 95% of other writers using Grammarly. I know my stories tend to have a larger use of vocabulary than the typical Literotica story - if there is such a thing - but I try to make my stories literate but readable.

I used to use the Word readability statistics to give me an idea of how easy a story is to read. I tried rewriting to get lower grade ratings for readability but I didn't like the result.
 
Amongst the myriad joys I've been facing is a fading of my memory. And language is a really weird one. I will lock up on the simpler terms and somehow stumble through my lexicon to find a much more complex word to slip in it's place. In my writing, I get criticized for this sometimes. But, what the reader doesn't know is that until they post the word I should have used, I couldn't remember it and replaced it with the five syllable alternative so I could drive the fuck on!

And then there's the times where I lock up completely and can not remember anything even similar and stand there "looking calm and cool and a little intimidating" according to my wife, but feeling like an idiot. Especially when I suddenly start talking again after a ninety second pause as if I'd never stopped. :eek:

During an "evaluation" several years ago, the white coated menace gave me a list of three words to remember and then talked with me for several minutes before asking me what the list of words was. I managed two.

After several more minutes, I suddenly blurted out the third one (a little too loud). Only instead of "earth", I blurted out "terra firma!"

I don't know that I have "favorite words" so much as I have the ones I can remember. :eek:
 
I use the word Caribou in every story I write. Go see if you can find it in all of them, :D
 
I can't think of any. It depends on the story. I tend to use short words where I can, so I can't think of any interesting words I keep coming back to. If I like them I don't want to wear them out.

If there's one sort of word use that gives me the most pleasure, it's probably to use verbs in an interesting or unusual way.
