like he was spelling treasure and was like "t -u -" i stopped him and we practiced and broke the word up but should i be doing things different??

Repetition of writing the word is a great way to get those letters to stick. If you could find a fun way to have him write the words he has trouble with it will help. There's the shaving cream on the table trick where you smear a thin layer and then the child uses their finger to write the word...also my kids LOVE white boards with the fun colored wipe off markers. Just make it fun and not feel like a punishment would be my advice.
