It stopped melting.
I now know what a blizzard feels like.

Roads are closed, barely got 200m outside and ended up with pockets full of ice pebbles and ice globules falling off my collar.
Definitely a hot chocolate and bad films day.

Thank you.

I'm a survivor. I think you are too and that you will find your rudder again. As will another who wants to remain nameless.

Sail on!

LOTS of smoke and the fire is burning toward where friends live. Only 5% contained and 95 square miles of burn area. Purple flag warning - FIRST TIME EVER! Everything here is charcoal. Power is finally back on after 4 days. I missed my Lit!
havent been too chatty lately.

Also glad you made it.

Hope the hellscape that follows gets relatively cleaned up without incident.

It'll be decades if not centuries before this is erased. The amount of burn area is immense. Something like 90-100 square miles is nothing but ash, stumps, and skeletons of dead trees. Most of it is on County land or National Forest and there's no money for reforestation projects. LOTS of money for subsidized housing, free medical programs, and so on, but none for helping Ma Nature do her thing.

We had a similar event in the mid 80's. The fire then burned all the pine trees on the tops of the mountains. There still isn't any new conifer growth up there 30 years later. Nothing but grass, weeds, and groves of burnt tree skeletons.

This will be the same. I can't even go buy 100 seedlings and plant them myself because that's a crime.

Lovely

So in addition to mismanaging wildlife resources, Californian legislation either
A) allows houses to be built improperly for the environmental conditions and/ or are developing populated areas improperly for the environmental conditions
Or B) grossly miscalculates the areas fitness for human habitability entirely.

Why put a ten or twenty year roof on a house virtually gauranteed to burn down in five. It's like building an igloo in the desert and thinking you can live in it in through July.

My understanding is that non-indiginous undergrowth is a major part of the problem; some of those pines could sap out & survive a burn if the undergrowth and trees around them didn't lift the fire into their branches.

I really want to blame the State legislature for this. I do. But the truth is, they aren't the problem. The problem are those people who live inside air conditioned buildings and who never go outside.

They have no idea of the richness and history of their environment. What it takes to keep an ecosystem alive. The ecosystem that creates the very air they breathe and nourishes the food they consume.

These people are the voters who keep the legislators who waste financial resources, prey on the weak, and pander to their constituents, in office. And, it's not just legislators, unfit Judges are in there too. Judges who decide that it's more important that these people have water to flush their toilets and water their driveways than use that water to grow crops.

So, the real problem is the people. People who only care that they can order take-out and get it in 30 minutes or less. What's a few hundred thousand acres of scrub brush, Where's my pizza! Bees? We don't need bees! Don't you understand, I only got 1 fortune cookie!

Meanwhile the land that supports all of us looks like the set from the movie Constantine.

I've had olfactory malfunction with headaches before, but pretzels smelling like vomit (enough to induce gagging) sets a new low.

I used to love pretzels.

Few things make me feel as stupid as German adjective declension. It's so easy. Why can't I get it right?

This is exactly how a period sex talk should go:

Him: *says lots of sexy stuff he wants to do to me*
Me: I'm on my period.
Him: I don't care.
Me: *blinks*
Him: *carries on with the sexy talk*

😍😍😍

How it tends to go instead;
Him: *innuendo*
Her: I'm on my period.
Him: So?
Her: it's messy, it's smelly, that's disgusting, you're disgusting.
Him: who are you?

I have my period.
Ex Him:
Fuck off.

Me now: I have my period.
Him: Take your fucking clothes off. Now.

The York Castle Museum is a wonderful museum, filled with exhibits that recreate in stunning details various historical eras and periods from Britain's past. The museum is housed in two former prisons, one a debtors' prison and the other a women's prison. The exhibits start in the women's prison, and I swear to God the sign over the entrance has an arrow pointing through the door and announces "Period Rooms Ahead".

What is the meaning of life.
I tried painting the number 42 everywhere but I haven't noticed any changes.

You're doing it wrong.

You can't just paint the number, for it to be the meaning of life you have to LIVE the number. Try arranging 42 of.... Everthing.
I'm too lazy for all that. Let me know how it goes
