I don't suspect socialism causes congenital heart issues no matter how much the thought of it gives you palpitations.

From the OP's link:

The government finally announced that they would allow and fund the necessary surgery at Boston Children's Hospital.

The surgery was paid for by the NHS.

We know that the best US health care is the best in the world. No one in the UK had the skills or equipment to perform this surgery.

But the cost was borne by the 'socialist' NHS.

Comrade, why did the "Socialist NHS" not have the " skills or equipment to perform this surgery?"

As I said - the US has the best medical services in the world. They are used by the world's dictators and tyrants and anyone who can pay the massive costs of high end surgery at the edge of what is possible.

Although the UK has some of the best research professionals for health conditions, the US has many more of them and the UK's professionals often cooperate with US establishments. My son-in-law is working in medical research in conjunction with a US unit. He often visits the US (and other countries) to lecture and exchange information with others in his field.

When anyone from other countries has a very rare and difficult health condition, the US is the obvious place to seek the best treatment.

The advantage of the NHS is that they will treat any UK citizen at no cost. Other European countries do the same with different models. The disadvantage of the UK is that as a small country we cannot do the extremes that are possible in the US's specialist units.

What is now at the edge of what is possible might become standard practice even in the UK in a decade or so, but if the condition is rare world-wide only a few institutions, usually US-based, have the ability to treat it.

That is the greater good Comrade, I am glad you pointed it out. Even though they cannot cure, they can treat everyone. That is what makes Socialism superior! You have free access! (And you most always get what you pay for!)

What's really funny about this, is that the US government funds a large portion of the basic research that goes into new medical treatments, equipment and procedures. But for some reason, these donkeys don't consider that "Socialism". Perhaps because the government then gives it away to private industry so they can then gouge the very tax payers that funded the research.

It's the American way.

And in the UK you have the option to use the NHS; to have health insurance at various levels of cover and get private treatment in an extensive network of private hospitals; to pay your own way; or to mix and match if you want to.

Charitable crowdfunding was getting close to raising enough money for this child if the NHS had not agreed to pay the cost.

We all pay for the NHS by various forms of taxation. If you have an urgent medical emergency in the UK, NHS treatment is best and fastest. If you have a problem that is not life-threatening such as needing a hip replacement? Private care is better and quicker.

Thx OGG for clarifying!

If you have an emergency medical condition in the US, you get treated.

Some would call that Socialism...

Curious question: Who pays for that? Is it the taxpayer/government or is it imposed on the hospital?
