Gone But Not Forgotten
Damn sometimes I miss you
New Jersey mostly in summer
when Silver Queen Corn spills
from bushels on farmstand tables
and just picked tomatoes in thick
red slices are salted and peppered
to perfection then nestled on bread
similarly thick with mayo spread:
Why that's poetry! When sun shines
on the shoreline where the Atlantic
tickles the toes and even now
listen--radios, announcements
from the pier, gulls screaming
in waves of sound and foam
carried on a sluggish breeze
past my postprandial nap,
when the sun is sinking gold
pink orange then the boardwalk
lights up a painted old honky-tonk
of a girl, shilling raw bars, taffy
coasters, wheels, prizes.
