A law which would require all pornography websites to verify the ages of visitors from the UK or face being blocked has been delayed.

The age verification law was introduced as part of the Digital Economy Act, and means that anyone wishing to view pornography online will have to prove they are over 18 years old.

Although it was due to be implemented in April, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport have now postponed it until "later in the year" as they consult on ensuring that the law will work properly.

I wonder how they would do the check? Surely no one viewing a website would give up their name, date of birth etc etc? Sounds like another unworkable pc intention

That's the real reason for the delay. It is intended for commercial porn sites where you have to pay to access so you have to use a debit or credit card.

Where the real problem is, is that the legislation requires 'visitors' to identify themselves as over 18.

In theory, because Literotica hosts some images, any UK person visiting Lit, signed in or not, must provide some verifiable proof that they are over 18. A simple declaration would not be enough. Every UK 'anonymous' would not be anonymous.

This sounds like a slippery slope. While it would definetly make under agers work a little harder for their porn, it would be quite the invasion of privacy. The only way they could work something like that would be with some kind of ID number associated with your identity. Then, there is the question of how much of what your watching/reading will they potentially have access to? A persons porn tastes can be a very personal thing. While they might say that they won't keep records or what not, it still leaves room for abuse. Even just being outed publicly as someone who consumes porn could be damaging depending on your social status. All that being said, it won't take the kids long to find a way around whatever system they implement. So is the way of the world.

I don't really have anything to add to the ID issue, but in reading this I did wonder: Is legal porn a bad thing? On what basis did the law get passed in the first place...who's agenda was being pushed forward? Would it not be more meaningful and useful to regulate more closely the porn industry itself to assure the safety of those who perform in them? Or perhaps the responsibility should be on the parents to talk to their children?

This seems very similar to anti-prostitution laws...which have never worked. And then there were/are the anti-LGBTQ laws that only serve to push normal human behavior underground. It is also a slippery slope toward the invasion of government into the bedroom, which seems to correspond with a conservative wave that is washing over governments in many countries.

Ahhh, isn't mankind just a basket full of fun and excitement

So, 18 year old Will E. Wanker signs up to a Taiwan based site and gets his jollies. He goes off to work, leaves the PC logged on. 17 year old brother Wally Wanker sits down and does his thing. PC Stella Hardcase strolls by, peeps in his window and notices the dirty deed in progress. Off to the Nic they go. Do they send Interpol after the site?

No. Legal porn is not a bad thing. This is a ridiculous and invasive nonsolution to a nonexistent problem.

I needed to confirm my age before I was allowed to watch this video...

I didn't go the whole route of signing up/in...but the title makes it sound like a how to for condoms sponsored by Trojan ;) The comments weren't definitive enough to tell, but one did mention something about seeing a nut sack

So what does their confirmation entail? Is it just an account where you promise to be a certain age, or an email, or ???

Also, does the UK send inspectors to every porn host and demand complete documentation? How will they enforce the law on non-UK websites? And how are they going to get said porn hosts to set up special registration forms for UK citizens? This will be a stillbirth much like Germany's supposed anti-pedo filter from a few years back. It was simply not enforceable.

It also feels like something that would be incredibly easy to get around. If I'm in the UK, and I have to deal with verifying my age every time I read or watch smut, I'm going VPN into the land of the free instead.

Keeping minor away from porn is a good idea. It's pretty obvious though that this opens up way too much room for abuse. People deserve some semblance of privacy.

I'm going to be frank.

This proposal has nothing to do with age verification - we all know there are going to be ways around that, regardless of the system being used.
This is about agencies and companies sticking their goddamn noses where it doesn't belong. I guaran-fucking-tee you the second that goes into effect, somebody somewhere is going to gather that information, and sell it to the highest bidder.
Selling internet habits is already a thing, I guarantee if it isn't happening with porn (thanks to VPN), then it will be when this goes into effect, depending on their reach, which I'd argue won't be very far, due to jurisdictional boundaries.

In theory, yes. In practice, everyone in the UK will learn how to use a vpn

How about 'Slurp' ??

how about his and hers magazines? "Slurp" for women, and "The Sticky Pages" for men. I liked my title, because it pretty well sums up how all my old girly mags ended up in high school. I wouldn't know for certain, but I don't think women would have that problem.

Expect the Ministry of Sexual Propaganda to regularly issue contradictory rules of approved pr0n. Sticky this month; icky last month; gooey next month. Potent immigrants are featured when domestic birthrates decline but maligned when white women have more babies. The Pr0n-of-the-Month club switches focus depending on demographics. Fetishes are targeted -- this is a good month for shoe-lickers, unicorn-tamers, and motherfuckers.
