Just a Breeze

Gusty and dusty the wind blows
Howling and alive out of the North
It bites and stings in its hurry
All day long and into the night

Even here in this hellish hot land
Our land of ferocious sunshine
Palm trees, sweat, and melting aspalt
That cold wind reaches us all

The yard's all atumble with leaves
And everything else not tied down
In our land, we note these things
Because not all such winds are alike

Such winds blow past and are forgotten
But sometimes, they become much more
For those are the howling winds of fear
Those airborn demons that twist and spin

They destroy all in their arbitrary path
Their chaos is fierce and unimaginable
The aftermath of sorrows are never forgotten
We see these winds blow, and we know

Today, its a cold north wind
And perhaps through the night
We are watching, we have seen
Its not this time, today's just a breeze.

Changing My Stars

It was one of those evenings
Whereby hindsight illuminates
The follies of my desperation
To change my unwholesome stars

I walked under the landscaper's ladder
Aghast, I quickly prayed and spun three times
As was proscribed to avoid ill luck
But that was by no means all, oh no

At our dinner, I spilled the salt
Forthwith. I grabbed the family black cat, Tillie,
And tossed her over my left shoulder
But sadly, fate was not done with me

Later that evening, the neighborhood owl
Hooted away atop the old cracked chimney
Recognizing my peril, I quickly ate a spider
Nauseating yes, but I know what to do

Weary, I prepared for my nights long sleep
Alas my luck, the mirror broke while I shaved
In my astonishment, the blade fell from my grasp
Picked it up, went to bed, and slept with my feet towards the door

Where in the night
Does my story go
Enveloping mystery
Deep and peaceful
Quiet and yet so alive
There in the dark
Among the stars
And a pale moon's light
There in the dark
Embrace it. Feel it
Become one with it
A creature of the night
When all the world sleeps
Fearless against the terror
Of the consuming darkness
What happens here at night
A story told in whispers
Here in the dark
Join us my love
In the everlasting dark
Live here in the black of night
Inky black and terrible
Will you bear it, join it
Become lost in the darkness
Your darkness
Taste the mystery
And crave its embrace
Here in the dark

Tumble and crash of the surf against the rocks and sand mild on it rhythms with a spray and mist salty and fine in the morning sky as gulls teem and dip and fly and cry across the leaden sky a fish and kelp stones and bones and shells tidepools with starfish urchins and crabbies abound sinking clams a full sail off into the distance and a low wind moaning across the sound the call of the sea reaching into my soul my ache and longing for jouneys and travels to fa off places on the great lifepool of tears of our mother earth

It's late in the evening; she's wondering what clothes to wear
She puts on her make-up and brushes her long blonde hair
And then she asks me, Do I look all right?
And I say, "Yes, you look wonderful tonight"

We go to a party and everyone turns to see
This beautiful lady that's walking around with me
And then she asks me, "Do you feel all right?"
And I say, "Yes, I feel wonderful tonight"

I feel wonderful because I see
The love light in your eyes
And the wonder of it all
Is that you just don't realize how much I love you

It's time to go home now and I've got an aching head
So I give her the car keys and she helps me to bed
And then I tell her, as I turn out the light
I say, "My darling, you were wonderful tonight

Oh my darling, you were wonderful tonight"

Songwriters: Eric Patrick Clapton

Breathe in the scent of the salt air
The spray of surf and endless waves

Taste the air and its earthiness
Fall leaves swirling on ancient hills

Shallow breaths in volcanic air
Sulfuric and burning with each draw

Hands running through the tall grass
Green, vibrant, growing vegetation

A blaze of colors in the garden
A riot of flowers and their perfume

The form lies still, decaying, and silent
Rotting carcass, the scent of death

Her erotic moans and sweating skin
With pheromones and scents of sex

Fire up the grill and sear the steaks
The scented smoke curls into the sky

The scented bathwater is enveloping
Soothing and mild, easing away the day

Wet puppies, my how they stink
Yipping and rolling into their bath

Some days, things go wrong
Some days its what we're handed
Some days really suck

missing you my luv
missing your lap tonight
and your sweet cuddles

missing whispers in the dark
holding hands
talk of work and poker
the latest in the news
as you pull me closer

tucking my head close to your chest
breathing in your scent
breathing and breathing
as your hand runs through my hair

missing you tonight
missing snuggling with you
setting my knitting aside
tucking under a blanket
music on low
and a few candles flickering

holding you tight
missing you
feeling your arms
shadows of your love
as I fall asleep
tonight
like so many nights before

goodnight my luv

Rainy Days and Nights

Steadily rain falls
A regular soft drumbeat
Creating puddles

Soaked through my clothing
Outdoors without my raincoat
Miserable cold

Splashing in puddles
Showered by another car
Shivering and wet

A final puddle
And unlocking the front door
Rain rolls down my nose

At last I am home
Quickly stripping off my clothes
She meets me and smiles

Hot soothing shower
No more shivering with cold
Soapy clean with smiles

A fresh warm towel
Dries me towards happiness
Clean dry fleece to wear

The kettle whistles
Hot tea in my easychair
Rain on the windows

A merry fireplace
Here indoors with my lady
And distant thunder

The power goes out
Candlelight and hot romance
Takes us through the night

She sleeps in my arms
The steady rain keeps falling
Peaceful and dreamy

Unforgettable

Another jarring hit and down he goes
Face first into inches of mud
Relentless rain creating a morass
With a groan he slowly rises
His mate extends an arm
With a grasp he raises his brother
Joining their mates in the cold
A huddle of youngsters with a dream
This is it, a last play with barely time
A season of brutal grinding
Straining muscles and minds
Pain, victories, losses, exhaustion
Down to this one final play
Their opponents are the same
Desperate, hungry, tired, and filthy
Today, one team would win

Lightning flashes in the distance
Thunder follows slowly
And he crosses the goalline
And it is over
Today and forever
They are Champions
Their shared ordeal is over

Whoops and cheers echo
In ears and minds through time
Looking at their fading pictures
No matter what, with a smile
Champions for just one more day

Treehouse Blues

Wind amongst the leaves
A creak of limbs and boards
A distant neighbor's dog barking
Cicada songs and bird harmonies
Sweat across my brow
Soaking my shirt
Sipping a soda

It's still here
Can't believe it's still here
In the copse behind the golf course
The creek bubbling close by
Wood still firm and straight
Weather stained and alive with memory
Memories of youth

Best friends and comic books
Sodas and bubblegum
Radios and girlfriends
Sleepouts at night
And shelter from the storm
A home when there was no other
Sights, sounds, smells, all here

Sighing happily as I sip that soda
The tree creaks and leaves rustle
A snap and rumble
Boards break
Hitting a broad limb
Leaves in my face
Thudding to the ground
In shock, with a groan
Oh my back!

Maybe

Maybe I will ride a bike
Maybe I will take a hike
Hike through a forest
Hike across the country
Country full of neighbors
Country full of friends
Friends from long ago
Friends newly met
Met with smiles
Met with hugs and kisses
Kisses in the pouring rain
Kisses dripping with passion
Passion raging in my heart
Passion fills an ocean of dreams
Dreams meant to be shared
Dreams both old and new
New to me new to you
New places to go
Go to the ends of the Earth
Go with me somewhere
Somewhere somehow
Somewhere a mystery
Mystery in the air
Mystery in her eyes
Eyes alive with love
Eyes that sparkle
Sparkle like the stars
Sparkle shines on water
Water that brings us life
Water clean and clear
Clear and cool
Clear over there
There we go again
There is always time
Time after sometime
Time enough for love
Love to take you there
Love in my heart
Heart full of sunshine
Heart ablaze with life
Life worth loving
Life is unforgiving
Unforgiving and constant
Unforgiving and hard
Hard as steel
Hard also at home
Home here with you
Home by the fireplace

Today

Where did the day go
I thought I had more time
That's the trouble with it
I always think i have more
Every breath I breathe
Each beat of my heart
Or vision of inspiration
Beauty beyond compare
Ugliness beyond description
Music that shivers my soul
My tears of pleasure
Or the pain of a hateful horn
I'll bear witness to it all
My life full of dreams and hope
Pushing back the darkness
With you all, my people
In this lifetime or the next
The one previous or eons ago
But mostly, just for today

Road Trip

1.

Afternoon in a sweltering garage
Sweat streaming from my face
A precision turn of the wrench,
Steel, aluminum, plastic, and grease
My knuckles hitting sharp edges
Knicked and bleeding with a grim smile
As the engine purrs in its idle
Wiping my hands and soiled tools
My thoughts wander to the morrow
And the long roads and highways ahead
The fabulous and dreadful scenery
Fantastic even as it becomes monotonous
Miles and miles to the border and beyond
Patting her as she powers down
The lady is sure ready to roll
Stripping off my shirt and going indoors
A bit of cleanup and gathering of my kit
An early repast and I'm quick to sleep
Dreaming of long journeys and an open road
My girl's sparkling eyes and radiant smile
Her warm embrace and soft lips

2.

Headlights glare and neon lights
Driving in the cool darkness of night
The stars above soon grow dim
With the fast approach of daybreak
My wheels just keep on rolling
Heavy against the freeway aspalt
And the city is in my rearview mirror
Fast across the steaming marshlands
The Summer's heat is unforgiving
With the steam and heat mirages
And a myriad of insect corpses
Decorate my windshield with their gore
The marshland soon gives way to forests
Whose amber sap now joins the fray
Ever present is the engine's steady rumble
The hum and whine of the wheels
Static on the stereo, and another dying town
How many more miles to go before I see her
A shake of my head as I turn the dial again
How many more miles before I get out of Texas

3.

The metroplex is huge and wild
The steel, glass, and concrete
Stark even as it is amazing
The traffic horrendous and fast
Inner city freeway driving
Shifting into a different gear
Near misses and brakelights galore
Road rage, crashes, and idiots
Then, finding a break in the madness
With a stop for gas outside a 'burb
Cheese n crackers and slimjims
Pork rinds, Bugles, gum, and coffee
I call my baby darling, her voice, a balm
Bags packed and waiting for me
Two shakes later, I'm outside her home
She bursts out the door, a whirlwind of excitement
With sparkling eyes and a matching smile
Laughter and kisses as I toss in her gear
Buckled in and we're off, dust in our wake
In time, we leave the metropolis behind
Flat as hell, the horizon is endless
Heading north and west out of town
The rivermarsh giving way to grasslands
The city shrinking in my rearview mirror

4.

Dark clouds gather across the sky
As we motor down the deserted highway
An endless horizon with driving rain
My hand rests upon her thigh
She gasps as lightning fills the air
And the wind howls with pelting hail
The southbound twister touches ground
Ferociously heading right for us
No overpasses and no cover
She opens her thighs
And I open the throttle
The engine roars in response
Her hips thrust softly with my hand
The race is on
Smiling grimly, I caress my darling
Softly, she kisses my cheek
And we clear the storm
Tornado's in my rearview
As we hurtle into the desert ahead
The sun sets in a kaleidoscope
My baby's fingers in my hair
We've many more miles to go

Look! It's ET

There's a crazy old show
With two wild stoners I know

They'll never win awards or fame
They just weren't so very big a name

Was is it ET the Extra-Terrestrial
Or Eddie Torres the Extra-Testicle?

From around the world the people cry
There's something strange in the sky

They kill the cows and kill the power
They abduct the people at any hour

Is it ET the Extra-Terrestrial
Or Eddie Torres the Extra-Testicle?

Are they found in monuments and art
Or even stranger as a fossilized oopart

Crop circles and a mysterious implant
Lights in the sky and the Roswell incident

Is it ET the Extra-Terrestrial
Or Eddie Torres the Extra-Testicle?

Hidden bases and fast flying saucers
Little green men reported by Chaucer

Really? Chaucer? Ridicule and derision
Government coverups, a decided omission

Is it ET the Extra-Terrestrial
Or Eddie Torres the Extra-Testicle?

Were they tripping, dreaming, and stoned
Or were those nutters really secretly cloned

Invaders from Mars, Lesbians from Venus
Help us help us! It has an extra penis!

I just can't say if it was ET the Extra-Terrestrial
Pass me a drink, it was Eddie Torres the Extra-Testicle

Dear X

Waves of grief
overtake me
in spite of myself
my face burning hot
words caught in my throat
silenced by the need
the felt requirement
to be nice... church nice
but oh how it burns

triggered again
by that same old man
no lion he
forever looking backwards
bitter for what was
utterly entitled
smug even

rolling his eyes as I speak
demeaning my words
reducing me to a pronoun
though he knows my name

the tears burn my eyes
hours after the insult

words spin in my head
infuriated at my own silence
and that this drives me
away from the pews
and my community

i drown in the loss
triggered by anger
gulping down words
i wish i could spit

let me cross myself
one more time
and just breath
safe and absolved

this is lost to me

*****

my studio is sacred space
where colors and thread
make a pathway to god

Evening Glow

Sitting on the front porch
A tumbler of burning golden brown
Caresses my palette with fire

A draw on the polished curved walnut
And the curley, swirley lividus.
Drifts slowly into the sky

Joining its blazing cohorts
Hail magenta, cerise, crimson,
Flaring pumpkin and blazing gold

With a smile as Spring unfolds
Amid the freshly mown emerald
The silken mauves scent opines

The Mask

I have but to ask
When reaching for my mask
Who do I allow to see
The heart and soul in me
Will you walk along the shore
Dance with me on the sandy floor
Lay serenely in the cool grass
Gazing at shooting stars falling fast
Listen to the bird sing
Of promises the day may bring
See the past and the new
Well darling? Will you?

Time Enough

Shines brighter than diamonds and gold
And I give it all away so freely
My time spent here with you all
Writing poetry few will see
Or know that I even do

My time so often spent with my family
Little do they know how little we all have
Always reaching for more
It is my pleasure to give
Can they not see that?

My friends, my coworkers, strangers
Church, charity, lovers, and sometimes me
I have time for you all, freely given
And yet so precious and rare
How worthy you all must be

And how worthy am I
That you should spend your time with me
I pray that it is so
That I have brought a smile
Some laughter, love, thoughtfulness
Enrichment, growth, fellowship,
Camaraderie, hope, and honor

I assure you dearest
Your time is not wasted on me
Thank you with all the grace that is mine
For sharing your time with me
In my heart, that is eternal

Apollo

Apollo, you fought well and true
Apollo, only Rocky could stand up to you
Apollo, Apollo lived by your creed
Apollo, oh Apollo, died by it too
Apollo was a champion through and through
Apollo the man, the sun shined on you
Apollo

Valhalla

The battle rages across the hoarfrost
Mighty warriors with hair of wild gold
Sing their songs as they strive and slay
Their courage and prowess in battle
Growls and screams like glaciers in the wind
Under the Northern lights of old
Fending off the Frost Giants so it is told
Told to the children in long tales of hero worship
Their blood stains brightly across the virgin snow
Deep in the frozen wastes in the land of the gods

Twilight and all is silent
Even the wind barely whispers
There will be no sun in the Arctic cold today
Only frozen death on the battlefield
Broken swords and cloven helms
Broken bodies and a prideful death
These warriors now patiently await their doom
The eerie glow returns as night falls
And the clouds open to a bright light
Riding through and across the sky
The Valkyries ride and sing on their winged steeds
Their master and king with his great spear Gungnir
One-eyed Odin points and proclaims of who will rise
And join him and his host in Valhalla
To be with him on the last day, Ragnarok
His mighty eight-legged steed Sleipnir rears
And thunder crashes spectacularly against the sky
As Valkyries return with their many charges

I lay their bleeding and moaning in the dark
Slashes across my body and a hammer against my temples
And the clouds snap shut
It is not my day for the halls of Valhalla
Not yet, and I live, will live
Mightily and well in a brave world
Of warriors and songs and all our people
Who face the darkness together
With hopes that our bravery against a cruel land
Be noticed by the All Father and his shining host
In this world and the next, Valhalla

Dinner and Bones

Tearing off to work
She sits outside with her hope
Work all day
One client after another
She lays in the grass
Sunning herself and hopes
A working lunch
Several phone calls
She remembers a bone
How good it was to chew
Afternnoon and more work
More clients to see
Phonecalls to make
She whines in her hope
When will he come home
Fighting through a sea of cars
A horn blares in anger
She thinks of dinner
And aches in her hope
The garage door opens
And sanctuary is at hand
She barks in elation
Her hopes have come alive
He's at the door
And her body wiggles all over
Smiles as he approaches
She barks, jumps, whines
Turns her loose
And she's gone in excitement
Standing tall as he watches
She laps the yard exactly thrice
Shaking his head, she'll be hungry
Why is she always so hungry
Heading inside
The day is done
Dinner and bones
Companionship and peace

Campfire Musings

Across the horizon of the Salish sea
The wind drifts lazily in the evergreens
Sol sinks in his dramatic blaze of color
Faint laughter among the boughs
In tune with the songs of night
There by the timeless campsite
The bluegray cedar aromas fill the air
As the tiny campfire comes to life
Grows slowly into the night
Surrounded by friends and family
Sharing warmth with hearts afire
In an eternal twilight by the sea
