Davina
In the three years that Nancy, her mother, had been online dating Tod she had never meet the man. Made no effort on her part to get to know the catfish. Because obvious that was what the man was, no one was that perfect but then again her mom was a hopeless romantic. The sort that would kiss the frog in hopes that it would turn into Prince Charming. In past cases she had kissed the toad, then sat by ignoring all their faults, misdeeds and outright lies because she loved them.
Davina had been seven when her father Duncan died and it had shattered the happy family. Her mom went off the rails and quit her job, pulled Davina from school for five months and together they went road tripping all over the united states and Canada. It had been one of the best times of her life following the worst time of her life. Even as young as she was, Davina thought that once they returned home everything would go back to normal. Home cooked dinners, board game nights and dress up parties at second hand stores. It didn’t. The house was too filled with memories and Nancy sold it and moved them to Miami.
They lived in Miami for almost a year in a tiny apartment where you could hear your neighbors talk and fight among other things. During that time her mother hopped from one boyfriend to another, none of them lasting more than a month. It was the time after dating her boss that lead to their second move, this time to San Francisco.
On and on it continued for Davina, moving from city to city and state to state every few or so. Friends were near impossible to make and even harder to keep and after a while she gave up. She built walls and distanced herself even from her mother.
It took her running away for the moving to stop. They had lived in almost every state of the continental US and the moving game had long gone stale.
“I want to stay here. No more moving until I graduate high school. We’re not moving again or I swear I’ll run away and never return!”
That had been almost four years ago and life had since settled down. There was happiness again and the mother daughter relationship was on the mend. It was all going to be alright.

“Davina, darling.” Nancy cooed pushing open her daughter’s door. “I have the greatest news!”
“Henry Cavill has seen the errors of his ways and is here to sweep me off my feet?”
“I think he did a fantastic job as that Flasher guy in that one tv movie show.”
It was pointless to correct her mother when she didn’t really care who Henry Cavill was or that he in fact played Superman. But by this point pressing further for anymore information was moot as Nancy continued to talk.
“Tod proposed!” She squealed bouncing on the ball of her feet waiting expectantly for her daughter’s reaction.
The book Davina had been reading fell from her limp hand as she stared at her mother with her mouth hanging open. “What?!”
“We’re getting married! There is an opening next week at The Rockefeller Center If we start packing now we can have everything ready to go. I already talked to the landlord and he won’t charge us anything for breaking our lease early as long as we clean up after ourselves before we leave.”
There was more but Davina had gone temporarily deaf. “Why would we need to terminate our lease early?” She didn’t want it to make sense because if it did that meant that they would be moving again and her senior year had just started two months ago.
Nancy frowned at her daughter not believing that she was choosing to be so difficult. “We can’t be married and living in different states, really Davina I thought you would be happy for me.”
“But I haven’t graduated high school yet! And, and Heather and I haven’t even celebrated our birthdays yet.” Heather and Davina were best friends and where Davina had turned 18 eight days ago, Heather would turn eighteen five days from now and together the pair would paint the town red celebrating their birthdays together. Last year they had gotten their belly buttons pierced with matching dreamcatcher charms. She didn’t want to seem like she wasn’t happy for her mom but she just couldn’t understand why it couldn’t wait.
Pruning her lips Nancy narrowed her eyes. “This is what’s happening and you can pack your things now or they can get left behind. The choice is yours.” And with that Nancy stormed from the room, slamming the door behind her.

“Do you have any other rooms available?” Davina asked the front desk host as they checked into The Peninsula.
“I have another room on the floor above-“
“I’ll take it.”
“Davina!”
Davina rolled her eyes shoulder her backpack with a groan. “What, he got us two rooms, what’s it matter if I switch rooms?”
“What if it cost more? We don’t want to look ungrateful and greedy.” They were from the lower middleclass tax bracket and if Davina believed any of her mother’s stories about Tod he was quiet wealthy and well off.
“Call it my birthday girl from my new Daddy Warbucks.” Davina sneered leaning her mother behind once she got her hotel card. It wasn’t that she didn’t like the guy, heck she had never meet the man she just didn’t know him from Adam and with her mother’s track record she didn’t old out any hope that he was a standup guy. “I’ll meet you tomorrow morning for breakfast and the walk through.”
“And with a better attitude missy!” Nancy called after her rebellious daughter. Not that Davina was rebellious at all. She was on the honor roll, Treasurer on the Student Council, captain of the soccer team and Student Ambassador. She was a daughter to be proud of but this last week was wearing on her. Nancy needed her daughter to be just as happy about this marriage as she was, her support as they transitioned into a new family. It was going to be hard for the both of them and she needed her daughter by her side.

Fingering her fake ID, Davina strolled right up to the front door with a confident smile on her face. As she approached the bounder she noted the slow rake of his eyes over her body appreciating the way her outfit flattered every womanly curve she owned without looking forced and tacky. Davina on the other hand loved the way the heels made her almost five foot five instead of her normal five foot two and three quarters.
“Have a good night.” He rasped, his eyes scanning her from head to toe again, lingering on her ass as she passed by him.
He hadn’t even checked her ID and Davina slipped it back into her purse hoping that the hipster bartender with gage earrings and man-liner would be just as overlooking as the bouncer.
“Tequila Sunrise.” She ordered flashing the guy behind the bar a sly smile.
