This Russian Jew wrote mainly in Yiddish as a young man but changed to Hebrew after he moved to Palestine. A great poet by any measure but not always accessable through translation.

"Look how the night envelops us, we are crushed
By darkness we grope like the blind;
Something has gone wrong, no-one knows what.
No-one sees, no-one tells,
If the sun has risen for us or set--
And chaos is all around , all around terrible chaos
and no escape" from Davar {The Word}

Bialek witnessed Russian pogroms in Bessarabia (modern Romania), but his sombre simple words seem to speak as much of the future as his own time.
