At home: do you fly the flag on Veteran's Day?
Do you fly the flag on all national holidays?
All the time? 24/7?
Tell us.

Do you light it at night? It's important to do that if you fly it 24/7.

It flies from my front porch and the porch light is on. It helps keep the Canadians out.

It's a nice tradition. The only time you should NEVER EVER fly the flag is on election day. They start banging on the door at 7:00 a.m., thinking your house is the freaking polling place. Particularly the illegal aliens. They get an early start.

What he said. There are those who strut and those who do. I've never been one to strut. Mine's a simple philosophy...get er done, then let er be.

I should have qualified my statement "except when ordered to wear it on my sleeve."

Something tells me you've lit some things in front of homes before.

Canada used to have a really nice flag:
I respect the current flag, of course, but it only reminds me of raking leaves in the autumn. I hated that.

It says..."Don't fuck with Canada or we will dry up and blow away".

I want to get a flagpole so I can have one.
Anyone know how to go about installing one of those? Or do they come with instructions?

Have someone do it for you if you don't know how to plumb it. It will look foolish if it's not.

Obviously. I don't do manual crap like that. I might break a nail. Gaw!

Easy. But it takes some advance planning to do it right.
Dig a hole about 2 or 3 feet deep, depending on how windy it is where you are.
Buy a pole anchor and some bags of ready-mix concrete (small bags are easier to lift).
Borrow or buy a plumb bob:
... and a level tool:
Put a board across the hole you dug to set the anchor at the correct level. Fine adjustments to make it plumb (straight up and down) are made later using the bolts.
Mix the concrete with water according to instructions in a wheel barrel or rent one of those electric mixers (a waste of money if you ask me).
But a bunch of rocks (not dirt) in the hole to decrease the amount of concrete you will use, maybe a rebar cage if you are anal about all that...
Pour, wait a week or two. Set two of the bolts that hold the pole base in place and tilt the puppy up into place. Adjust.
It's a good idea to presume the pole will one day fall, so keeping it a ways away from the house, driveway, etc., is not such a bad idea.
Oh, and you will need a permit.

I balance my lack of flag flying with a lack of Christmas lights.

A friend of mine in grad school had one of those installed at his house. Had a couple pretty sweet parties there. Then his roommates got boyfriends and became lame >
