Talking

I've been a poacher of eggs...

But, then, you knew that was coming.

technically...yes

or at least , I have been...

My grandfather was a poacher. That was how he often put meat on the table.
Often the only way.
He started taking me out with him when I was about seven . I didn't even realise it was actually 'illegal' until I was about 13 when we moved to a more urban area . Where I grew up it was just part of a way of life.

All through later school and college , when we went camping my friends thought it was really odd I could generally 'live off the land' .

Some thought it was archaic that anyone actually knew how to take game, and do all that messy prep',. Mind you , can't remember anyone ever refusing fresh cooked meat.

It also had some odd effects on some young ladies . They seemed to see it as some British version of a modern day mountain man , and be somewhat charmed by it . No where near accurate , but I wasn't going to argue . Who was I to disallusion them.....
(hums tune to Jeremiah Johnson)

So 'historically' , yes . However , I stopped any hunting of live game , unless I was going to eat it, decades ago.

and despite having taken part in necessary deer culls , I have not , never not , shot Bambi...nor his mum... just the older and sick ... errrrr 'ish'... well , venison is rather pleasant .

We bait the deer with corn...

Then in the fall we shoot a deer; there are simply too many of them, hell, the road takes three or four every fall alone!

Then we use the chainsaw filled with cooking oil to butcher them.

Then we use the 'coons, 'possums and deep freeze to hide the evidence...

... or did you mean the purloined eggs?

shamenskiss, that sounds pretty cool.

i was in my mid teens when i was introduced to it and for a while i was utterly hooked.
every time i walk past a fiend of bunnies or hares i'm reminded how much i miss my old lurchers.
but these days i just eat the fruits of someone else's poaching fun.

deer, hare, rabbit, pheasant, fish...

they never taste quite the same when you buy them from a butcher. perhaps it's the freshness, perhaps it's the thrill.

we knew a fisherman who'd bring back the excess catch they were supposed to toss back & weren't allowed to sell. technically i suppose he was a poacher too.

...i've always avioded the messy bit if i could. blood & guts under my fingernails are not attractive.

thanks for the explanation, aj

the deer become a plague here too...no wolves & bears left to control the population. they end up under cars all too often.
