More to the point a soldier, John Van de Walker, keyed his car.
Widespread reports are that multiple servicemen gave Nidal M. Hasan lot of shit for being Muslim. Not simpleminded civilians like busybody, vetteman & Frisco - whose opinions don't matter to anyone - but the people he served with.
I had a lengthy conversation with a former Camp Pendleton soldier about three years ago, and he told me that roughly 70% of the soldiers he went to Iraq with were from the southeast U.S., and that they all had a bazillion jokes about "niggers, spics & queers" to tell each other to pass the time. He said most of them would spit on a minority if they had the opportunity not to be caught. (Y'know, sort of like how a person might key a car and get away with it.)
With regards to Hasan: a well-balanced person of sane mind wouldn't allow racial insensitivity and personal attacks of this nature to affect him so much that he would commit such a heinous act. But our armed forces are supposed to be strong of arm and character. Is it time to require more extensive intelligence and mental wellness testing for America's finest, so that we have less racists representing our country here and abroad?
