Next to some stories what do the little red squares with an H, E and W in then stand for?

H = "hot." In order to get the "hot" designation, a story must have at least ten votes, and have a score of 4.5 or better

E= Editor's Choice. These are chosen by the site editors (owners). They really like this story, for whatever reason.

W= is a story that has won either a monthly contest, a special holiday contest, or a year-end award.
