Ammo Can Cooking

Amazingly enough the Ammo Can is a wonderfull cooking implement.

It's an oven, it's a stove and it's a kettle. You can use it on a fire or even strapped to the side of a cars engine.

Here's a recipe for the Ammo Can. Corned Beef Hash, Or Bully Beef Hash.

After cleaning out the ammo can put in a can of Bully Beef, a couple of smallish Potatoes chopped small, an Onion and a quarter cup of water. To this you can add whatever you have on hand. Shredded Carrots are good as is Garlic. I have even been known to add an inch or so of Horse Radish. (Shredded of course.) Lettuce or Cabbage is good. Hell anything you happen to have handy works.

Close the can and put it on the heat. either on the side of a fire, on the camp stove or attached to the exhaust manifold of a vehicle. Let it cook for a while.

ANother way to cook something in an ammo can is eggs. This works great for a group of people.

For each person have a ziplock bag.

In each bag break a couple of eggs. (Beaten of course.) Add such things as the person likes. Minced Ham, Minced Veggies, Cheese. In the bag mix everything together.

Fill the Ammo Can 3/4 full with water and place on a fire or other heat source. When the water is boiling add the bags filled with eggs.. Let them sit in the boiling water for ten minutes then pull the bags. Open the bags and dump nto a plate or eat right out of the bag.

You can do the same thing by attaching the ammo can to the exhaust manifold of a vehicle.

Back in the day, we used to just sit a can from a C-ration pack on the exhaust manifold or drop it into a canteen cup of water. Once the can was hot, we'd put the instant coffee into the water and voila! Then came MRE's. Those damned things first came out with ink on the package that was toxic. If you heated a rat and then drank the water as coffee, you'd be sick as a dog. Great concept, DARPA!

Don’t know if I ever told you, but you were the first person I “met” on Lit. You invited me into Molly’s thread and made me feel at home. I really appreciated that. You also prolly know more about the “doings” of our family than just about anybody else on Lit. That’s cuz you care and are appreciated for being you.--posthumous message from Safe_Bet. And I still care and I still love her. Rest in the Light, Suzy.

.30 and .50 cal MG belt ammo boxes make great tool carriers...they even have a handle and a lid that locks down.

I wouldn't try cooking in one tho.

As long as you clean them out well they're great for cooking in.
