Water vs. Coke
Water vs. Coke
WATER
#1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half the world population)
#2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger.
#3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
#4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.
#5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
#6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain
for up to 80% of sufferers.
#7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on
the computer screen or on a printed page.
#8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast
cancer by 79%., and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water
you should drink every day?
COKE
#1. In many states the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from
the highway after a car accident.
#2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.
#3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the 'real thing' sit for one hour,
then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
#4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers:
Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
#5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble
away the corrosion.
#6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
#7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake.
Thirty minutes before ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix
with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.
#8... To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into the load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run
through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your
windshield.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION:
#1 the active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric
acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis.
#2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup! (the concentrate) the commercial trucks must use a hazardous Material place
cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.
#3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean engines of the trucks for about 20 years!
Now the question is, would you like a glass of water? or Coke?

Aside from that, it is certainly better for your health to drink a half gallon of water per day than a can of soda per day-- and most people drink more than one can of soda, and less than two quarts of water.

This was sent out as a company health and wellness message. I thought it was interesting, because every once in a while I enjoy a rum and coke.
I'm hoping that next week they will come out with the benefits of Bourbon over Scotch.

I don't drink water. (Ever see what it does to pipes?)
I don't drink soda. Too damned sweet.
Give me a damned beer.

Iced Tea.
And I've heard tell that 8 glasses of water is actually too much. There was a myth that got around that people should be drinking 8 glasses a day, but it's really not good to drink that much water. You can get water intoxication.

I love Coke, but I cut my intake of it in half, from 14 a week to 7. I have been drinking even less this last week on vacation. I have been making up for it with water.

Mythbusters did a show on all these things associated with coke. I think most of them were myths.

Yeah. That 8 glasses of water a day is wrong, based on erroneous interpretation of data.
There was some Princeton researcher back in the 40's who did all this pioneering work on metabolism. What he did was hook subjects up so he could record all their metabolic input and output—oxygen, calories, water in; CO2, work, water out—and he found that the total amount of water lost during the day for some hypothetical average human came to about 8 glasses.
Someone took this to mean that we should drink 8 glasses of water a day to replenish it, but what they failed to take into account was the water we get from food and mealtime beverages, which is quite significant, maybe like 75% of our daily needs. So the advice is just wrong.
So there's no need for the average person to keep guzzling water all day. No other creatures do that. Drinking so much water just makes you pee more and lose electrolytes in your urine.
BTW, the acidity of the phosphoric acid in Coke is insignificant when compared to the natural acidity of the hydrochloric acid in your stomach, which is several orders of magnitude stronger.

But the acid and sugar of regular coke certain can affect your teeth. Daily big gulps of drinks loaded with sugar, caffeine and acid, we'll agree, aren't the best for one's health.

If Coke can clean engines or battery terminals, just think how clean my insides will be after a daily can of Coke. Wow!

As noted in the snopes link, most of these "facts" about Coke are urban legends. Coke is a slightly better solvent for some things due to its acidity, although there is less acid in a can of coke than a glass of Orange Juice. Coke is much cheaper than OJ, hence it has other properties.
Most of those dehydration myths have been more or less disproven, some of which were largely propogated by the fitness drink industry. 8 glasses of water a day is only ideal for high performance athletes in training or on extremely hot days when you sweat a lot. Humans get a lot of the water we need from the food we eat.
However, those trying to lose weight would do well to switch to water. Drinking calories is a major problem for obesity. They tend to be absorbed quickly and leave you hungry shortly after. Sugar soft drinks are also bad for teeth to the point that most dentists recommend using a straw if you're going to drink them. So basically, yes, water is better for you, but Coke is hardly poison, especially if we're talking about consuming a can a day or so.

Vinegar is a great cleaner too, it'll remove calcium built up even, but there isn't a huge call to give up pickles, sour kraut or pickled beets. (Why am I defending Coke? I don't even like the stuff!)

Part humor and part conjecture.
It wouldn't be inconsistent with some of the things both Coke and Pepsi have engaged in over the years.

A friend of mine who was struggling with his weight quit drinking soda, and in 6 months he lost something like 40 pounds. Quitting soda was the only lifestyle change he made during that time.
I stick with water, but once in a while, if we're out at a fast food place, I'll pay for a soda but cut it in half with water at the self-serve station, which totally grosses out my GF. Same thing happens when I eat over at her house. She gives me the ginger ale bottle, and the water bottle, and rolls her eyes while I fill my glass with the half-and-half mixture. (We have a great relationship, BTW.) Funny thing is, I don't need to watch my weight. I just hate the taste of all that sugar.
