Turmeric V. Cancer

An extract found in the bright yellow curry spice turmeric can kill off cancer cells, scientists have shown.

In traditional French cooking, the proper way to whip egg whites is in a copper bowl. The copper reacts with the protein to give fluffy air filled whips. If you don't have a copper bowl, a pinch of turmeric will serve the same purpose.

That is amazing stuff.

If you can't whip eggs without the help of a copper bowl, better to lightly swab the inside of a bowl with white vinegar. Tumeric affects the color and taste. Just a drop of vinegar will do.

I've also seen some homeopathic remedies that use large amounts of turmeric to help boils disappear.

Sure, of course. I think the study was based on observed rates in India.

It doesn't actually add much taste. You can leave it out but your curry will look muddy.

The last project I was working on as a cancer researcher/phytochemist was an application for a grant from the NIH to develop a database of the genomic effects of certain plant products and natural diet supplements, working with a pharma company that had already developed such a database for standard pharmaceuticals. The grant was for proof-of-concept so we limited it to 4 plant products, which included turmeric. This was 2 years ago: genomice (read: anticancer) effects of turmeric are not exactly new.

Not exactly. The Persian kitchen has a good deal of very spicy foods, and Iranians have among the highest incident rates of throat cancer.
