What exactly is a "public option?"

What exactly is the "public option?" They have been talking about that constantly on the news today, what does that mean exactly?

It means government wants to run health care, so they undercut insurance companies on price to get them out of the business and then they can turn around and nationalize all aspects of health care because the private sector refuses to "compete" with them.

Too damned greedy to stay in business if there's no profit it it.

Here's an illuminating example of what I'm talking about:

You missed the part about leaving all the profitable sectors in private hands, with the taxpayers carrying the unprofitable sectors, much like World Bank enforced privatisation programmes in developing countries.

Well, duh, excuse me but being from a more advanced state in socialised medical care and seeing it in action first hand, privatisation of profitable sectors is the next step, even if it appears retrograde at this time in your book.

The free market system forced on us by UN capitalists demands private access to profit centres but then maybe that only operates in countries outside the USA, huh?
After all, its usually US money that gouges the jewels out of a country once the World Bank and IMF have hogtied them in debt.
The Taxpayer ends up the mug carrying the load of bureaucracy but without the usual subsidy from the profit centres.

like THIS is entertaing!

Not a Parody [Jonah Goldberg]

This is the best story of the day! The UN Human Rights Council is troubled — deeply, deeply troubled — by rumors that New York City's lack of affordable housing violates human rights. So it is dispatching “a special rapporteur on the right to adequate housing.” From the Times:

Everybody knows New York City is an expensive place to live. But the United Nations wants to know if affordable housing is so tough to come by that it actually violates human rights.

The United Nations has assigned an official, “a special rapporteur on the right to adequate housing,” to check the city’s affordable housing. The rapporteur, Raquel Rolnik, is to tour the city for the next three days with housing advocates and city officials to “hear the voices of those who are suffering on the ground,” she said.

The United Nations Human Rights Council appoints a rapporteur, or independent experts, to investigate human rights conditions around the world. In the case of Ms. Rolnik, a professor of urban planning at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, her “mission” is to tour New York City and six other places in the United States and to report back to the United Nations General Assembly about housing rights violations and advances.

After that, “We send off letters to governments to ask, ‘Is this true? What’s going on?’ and to please intervene,” she said.

Housing advocates will be taking Ms. Rolnik to the Atlantic Yards site in Brooklyn to see the results of the government’s use of eminent domain to seize property; to the New York City Housing Authority’s Grant Houses in Harlem to see how public housing residents live; and to the Bronx to meet residents whose landlords are in foreclosure.

At a town hall meeting last night in Morningside Heights, residents wept and shouted at Ms. Rolnik. They complained about deteriorating public housing, the lack of housing subsidies for AIDS patients, landlord harassment and many other issues, large and small.

She told them: “I am representing the right of adequate housing as a human right

He has, like, one-third of the puzzle pieces, which most people don't have, but then he connects them all with crayon drawings.

Does that mean that we have a choice to choose the government insurance, or to buy private insurance? Or are we all forced to take the socialized medicine?

"Public Option" is just another name for "Emergency Rooms" but under the government's proposed new healthcare plan, the traditional meaning of an ER has changed somewhat.

The public option would be a state run health insurance that would compete with insurance companies, bringing real competition to the market place, and driving down prices for private insurance plans.

All the socialists/communists would probably take the government insurance just to make a political statement.

Flash: The public Option will now be referred to a the "Consumer" Option. When people hear public option they think of taxes being involved. Not so when you rename it "consumer" Option. Remember, swine flu disappeared when they renamed it too.

It means you have a temporary choice until the Congress can kill off evil insurance and then you're at their mercy...

That's a polite fiction at best.

Did AMtrack bring down the cost of traveling by rail?

Did the Post Office bring down the price of first-class mail?

As it's described in the bill, you'll have a choice between the public plan and private ones if:

1. You're not offered insurance through your job.
2. Your state allows you a choice (some current estimates are that some two-thirds of states will opt out as the bill allows them to do).

As a result, the vast majority of Americans won't have any additional choices.
