What is Fox News Really?
Tonight on the O'Reilly Show, I heard Bill say that Fox was the most powerful network news station in the world! I tune to MSNBC during both the Chris Matthews and Keith Oberman show and they were talking about...you guessed it, Fox News.
What with the Obama Administration snubbing Fox News entirely and the 'usual suspects' here even have a special name, "Faux News", I thought to do a little searching and see whassup?

Perhaps all the twitterpation by the Left is because Fox News is or has become, the voice of the people?
It is amusing and entertaining, is it not?

Fox News is the opposing voice versus a chorus of center-left opinion uttered by the major newspapers, networks, CNN and MSNBC. It also has the audacity to question Obama and his posse's lurches toward Socialisim.
Dissent is a key building block of Democracy...stifiling of such is not. When the current administration tries to muzzle or disparage it's critics, everyone better watch their backs. Witness the denigration of the citizenry who spoke against government controlled health care or those who marched against ballooning deficits and higher taxes.
Keep your powder dry and watch the church steeple.

Disregard the fools, my friend, they are running scared and have no alternative than to ignore and ridicule.
I have noted that the emergence of Glen Beck, the ACORN expose', the Van Johnson outing, and Hannity, pushing the Tea Party brigade, which is now on another tour, has driven O'Reilly even more centrist and apologetic in his recent programs.
Here on the forum, the 'usual suspects' are noted by their absence in defending either the man or the programs in the White House, save a few barbs and obscenities.
PBS ran tonight, a program dissing Herbert Hoover, the Stock Market disasters and the Great Depression and the marvelous appearance of Franklin Delano Roosevelt as a 'savior' who would change America in an astonishing manner.
PBS seldom airs anything without a purpose and I leave it to you to parse the relevance of this bit of programming.

During the Bush Era, the left liked to remind us how dissent is patriotic. Nowadays, they don't bang that drum quite as loudly.

Dissent is patriotic, especially when the dissent is aimed at the malfeasance that resulted in 4000 american dead, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi dead, and a crashed economy. Corporate-sponsored propaganda refuting reform of a corrupt system is not patriotic. I remember years ago, we heard about propaganda coming from Russia. We were aghast. Now it's coming from Fox News and certain portions of the population are eating it up as if it were Gospel.
Polling indicates those who get their news from Fox have the lowest comprehension of current events. Fox is a celebration of ignorance.
It is possible to disagree with government policies without resorting to name-calling and outright lying, but not over at Fox.
Remember when the Gov Sanford story broke, and Fox had a 'D' next to his name all day? This is how Fox works. It's all about first impressions. They send out memos every day with talking points that must be followed (by both Fox and the Republican drones in Washington.) These talking points are supported by the news programs and commentary programs. The whole presentation of the news is shaped by these talking points.
During the run up to the ACORN scandal, Fox mentioned ACORN something like 1,000 times, in comparison to mentioned Halliburton 20 times. Where was the story on the gang rape that resulted in legislation - the "gang rape Republicans" thread here at the AH? Did Fox ever cover that? Did Fox cover the story about GIs in Iraq getting electrocuted in showers installed by Halliburton (or KB Root - I'm not sure which)? We've got soldiers dying in Iraq from shoddy workmanship, and Fox is covering rogue employees at ACORN.
You folks are so utterly clueless, it's embarrassing. Fox is leading you around by the nose and you don't even realize it. Every heard the old expression "they'll piss in your mouth and call it rain?" And you folks actually swallow! Ew!

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–
Quote:
FOX News Channel (FNC) expanded its ratings dominance among its cable news competition in all categories during the first quarter (Q1) of 2009, beating CNN and MSNBC combined in viewership according to Nielsen Media Research. Marked by President Obama’s first months in office and an escalating economic crisis, Q1 2009 was FNC’s third highest rated quarter in prime time in the network’s history – behind Q4 2008 (Presidential election) and Q3 2005 (Hurricane Katrina).
Among all basic cable channels, FNC ranked second for the quarter in prime time viewership, with CNN and MSNBC lagging behind at 17th and 24th, respectively.
In prime time, FNC bested CNN and MSNBC combined with an average of 2,250,000 viewers (up 24%) during Q1 2009, compared with CNN’s 1,126,000 (down 10%) and MSNBC’s 950,000 (up 22%).
In total day, FNC also rated higher than the competition with 1,203,000 total viewers (up 26%) compared to CNN’s 740,000 (up 17%) and MSNBC’s 473,000 (up 20%). FNC ranked fifth among all basic cable channels for the quarter in total day viewership while CNN and MSNBC followed at 14th and 28th, respectively.
In the key 25-54 demographic, FNC expanded upon an already commanding lead in prime time averaging 511,000 viewers (up 19%) compared with CNN’s 343,000 (down 22%) and MSNBC’s 343,000 (up 7%). In total day, FNC averaged 317,000 (up 23%) compared to CNN’s 236,000 (up 7%) and MSNBC’s 180,000 (up 11%).
FNC also secured 9 out of the top 10 programs in cable news for the quarter based on total viewership. The O’Reilly Factor marked #1 for 100 consecutive months in March and led all programs with 3,387,000 viewers, up 27% over last year.
Rounding out the top five programs were: Hannity (up 36%); Glenn Beck (up 90%); Special Report with Bret Baier (up 39%); The FOX Report with Shepard Smith (up 29%); On the Record with Greta Van Susteren (up 26%).
In January, FNC launched three news programs which have posted significant ratings gains over Q1 2008. Glenn Beck (5:00 – 6:00pm ET) averaged 2,233,000 (up 90%) in total viewers and 548,000 (up 115%) in the 25-54 demographic.
Beck was also the fastest growing program in all of cable news in March – up an astounding 118% (2,271,000) in total viewers and 171% (580,000) in the 25-54 demographic when compared with the same time period in March 2008.
Special Report with Bret Baier (6:00 – 7:00pm ET) averaged 2,037,000 (up 39%) in total viewers and 446,000 (up 41%) in the 25-54 demographic. Hannity (9:00 – 10:00pm ET) averaged 2,671,000 (up 36%) in total viewers and 646,000 (up 35%) in the 25-54 demographic. All three new programs beat CNN and MSNBC combined in total viewership during their respective time periods.
FOX News Channel (FNC) is a 24-hour general news service covering breaking news as well as political, entertainment and business news. For more than six years, FNC has been the most watched cable news channel in the nation. Owned by News Corp., FNC is available in more than 90 million homes.

Liberal intellectuals often express disdain for the silent majority; those Americans who comprise the largest voting bloc in any election. They are the 'average' people, the 'Joe Sixpacks' of the world, not the artsey fartsey left wing intellectual Bohemians who wave their hankies over gay marriage and abortion bound teens.

If this wasn't such a joke, I'd laugh. If ya can't confuse them with facts. Baffle them with bullshit. Not only is the source crap but the facts they state have nothing to do with the fact that a;ll Fox puts out is propaganda.
The silent majority was a myth back in the day and still is. They may be there but thay don't vote and for the most part don't care one way or the other. So they support nothing as several people learned during elections.
Amicus this even more pathetic than the last three.

TxRas...if MSNBC and Chris Matthews, who got a tingle up his leg when Obama was elected, had the ratings of Fox, Beck or O'Reilly, you would be shouting the news from the top of the hill...if there were any hills in Texas...
You called the majority ignorant when the elected the Bush's & Reagan, but enlightened when the majority chose Clinton and Obama. That same majority is making the decision to turn to Fox Network for their news and opinion and you deem them as ignorant astro-turf...
There have been a couple 49 State landslide elections in the past...look for another one when Obama is defeated in 2012 and the Republicans could have the Logo Elephant as a candidate and they would still win as the hatred of Obama will increase geometrically as he fails at every turn.
You folks really picked another Carter/Johnson this time and you will pay the consequences.

I heard on the radio today something about Roger Ailes, (FOX News president), and his "orchestra pit theory". So I Googled it, and found this:
Quote:
Ailes also came up with the "orchestra pit theory" regarding sensationalist political coverage in the news media, with the question:
"If you have two guys on a stage and one guy says, 'I have a solution to the Middle East problem,' and the other guy falls in the orchestra pit, who do you think is going to be on the evening news?"
|
This theory is run to perfection on FOX News. Grab the attention with loudness and spectacle truth and obectivity be damned, then when you have the attention proceed to hammer whatever message you want to push, be it commersial, political or actually jornalistic.
This is not a political observation as much as a rethorical one. CNN for instance has parroted it and does lots of similar things, but the message they hammer is more politically diverse, some left, some right and a whole lot of IF YOU CHANGE THE CHANNEL YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WILL DIE!! But FOX's (and earlier CNBC's, if I remember correctly) Ailes is the granddaddy of the tactic.
In both cases, the goal is to sell ads. FOX News has an extremely loyal base of both affluent and middle class consumers. As long as FOX News feed them with what they want to hear, and affirm the bieliefs they have, they will tune in, and the advertisers will have a direct line to their wallets.

I rarely watch tv; most of my news comes from the puter. For opinion I link to Camille Paglia (gay & liberal), Florence King (gay & fascist), Peggy Noonan (former Reagan writer), George Will, Charles Krauthammer, and Walter Williams (black economist). I catch CNN and FOX at the restaurants I patronize. And read 2 daily newspapers. I dont do Glenn Beck, O'Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh, or any of the talk shows. On one occasion I caught O'Reilly lying out his ass about an issue I know a lot about...he made it up as he went. So i dont tune him these days.
Beck, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity are carnival barkers.
But I have yet to see a conservative on CNN. FOX has Democrats on virtually all the time. Hillary goes on FOX, Susan Estrich, Ed Koch, just about all the liberal soldiers pop-in and give an opinion. But not on CNN.

All newscasts are biased in one form or another as to which way they want the story to be told. Five different opinions on the same story. I avoid the news and just watch Family Guy and the Simpsons and get the take on the story from them. I like their version better and it isn't as dire or slanted. It's the exact same story as on the news channels, so what's the difference? Even Stephen Colbert puts forth a better effort than Fox.

Yes! Every news source is biased, but bias alone isnt a problem; the problem is limiting your news to one source.

Exactly Jimmy, that's why I watch both shows. Sometimes one of them gets it right more than the other. And I like the guest appearances more. News would be far more interesting if they had guest casters. I wish the topless news was more mainstream. I'd watch it, even if it was in another language with subtitles. Some of those women are hot.

TxRad - just give Mon Ami one small task at a time....don't tax his capabilities too much.....he was, after all 'the Glenn Beck of the Sixties' - I'm not sure who should feel elevated or deflated by that comparison.....(Beck would surely get out the chalkboard and diagram a conspiracy if he found out that he was being stalked by Mon Ami)

Here's Faux News at its finest
Jon Stewart catches Sean Hannity fake news footage
As The Daily Show found, Hannity mixed news footage of the Beck-inspired 9/12 rally with footage of the much-smaller crowd at the anti-healthcare reform rally (oh, excuse me, the "press conference" ) last Thursday, even remarking that it was a "great crowd for a Thursday". Beck's much larger rally was on a Saturday.

“Capital must protect itself in every way… Debts must be collected and loans and mortgages foreclosed as soon as possible. When through a process of law the common people have lost their homes, they will be more tractable and more easily governed by the strong arm of the law applied by the central power of leading financiers. People without homes will not quarrel with their leaders. This is well known among our principle men now engaged in forming an imperialism of capitalism to govern the world. By dividing the people we can get them to expend their energies in fighting over questions of no importance to us except as teachers of the common herd.” - JP Morgan

Here's the Fox truth. They lie so often they're easy to make fun of. I don't discount them keeping Obama honest, as that is the job of a news organization. But, c'mon this is just silly....
