How have moths survived this long?

I saw a gigantic moth one day when my hubs and I were coming home from dinner. It was green and was waaay bigger than any butterfly or any other insect I had ever seen before.

At first I thought it was a Luna moth, but it was WAY bigger than any Luna could have been. I mean, this thing was, and I'm not even kidding here, about 7 inches long with a wingspan that could have been double that. When I looked at it, I thought, 'Oh, how pretty, the neighbors put up some decorations..." and then it MOVED.

I'm someone who does not believe that we are being visited by alien life.

That would have convinced me otherwise.

But seriously, how do the fuckers make it? Everyone eats them. They have no survival instinct. The gather around bright things to make it easier to see them.

But you know what? You have a good point. I guess they probably just breed in such prolific numbers they still manage to continue as a species despite their lack of useful instincts and the fact that many critters find them tasty.

I sincerely doubt anything would want to eat the one I saw though. I seriously regret not running and grabbing my camera to get a shot of it, even when I think back to it it's unbelievable and I was THERE!
