Kimberly sighed and fought back the yawn of fatigue,she had been up almost 24 hours straight. There had been three different murders and she was the only senior forensic examiner. She had one assisstant who was on maternity leave. She dropped her evidence case on the long metal table and cracks her neck. The smell of formaldehyde and death no longer bothered her,but sometimes the quietness of the morgue could be intimidating.

She took the opened bag over to her desk and then slowly walked back to lock the door behind her,2 am in downtown Detroit was not a good thing sometimes. She donned the lab coat and her gloves and turned her attention to the body on another gurney. It was like all the others. Female,ealry to mid twenties,red hair. They had not been sexually molested but the assault had been brutal.Their wounds reminded her of grizzly bear bites she had seen growing up in Montana.There wasnt many grizzly bears around this area,probably none.

She gauged the wounds,she couldnt help but shudder. They had been visciously mauled,and what appeared to be feed on. She shook her head as the many werewolf movies ran through her head. She needed sleep,she was getting paranoid. She worked for another hour before logging her voice recordings and sliding the newest body ito the cooler tray. She locked up all her evidence and left through the basement door beneath the hospital. She walked through the parking lot as the sun rose,her own red hair sparkling like a brilliant ruby. Tossed and tassled she shoved it over her shoulder digging into her purse for her keys. She was not a large woman,standing around 5 foot 5,she could hold her own in a fight. She had 6 older brothers and a father who retired from the Army.

Stopping she turned her gaze around the lot and shook off the feeling of eyes on her.She jumped as Security officer Joe drove by in his small cart/car and beeped at her smiling. She gave him a tired wave and slid into her car.She drove the few blocks to her small apartment and up the 3 flights of stairs. She ulocked her door and entered the apartment. Dropping the purse on the chair next to the door,she walked to the small bedroom and dropped down onto it. She didnt even remove her clothes,sleep came quickly and deeply.

At first Matt had hated it. But after you got a control of the overwhelming lust for blood he eventually began to accept being a werewolf. Matt would probably never completely come to terms with the things he did when he had started as a werewolf, the images of murder and frenzy still haunted him at times, which is why he ended up being a detective, in hopes that he could somehow repent for his sins by stopping other murderers. The powers he had gained as a werewolf helped with the job. In his human form he was given a slight improvement with his senses, but as a werewolf he could track a scent from miles away, his eyesight was 10 times better then that of any human, and his strength and speed was just amazing. All these traits had helped him move up the ranks landing him as one of the best detectives in the precinct.

Which is why he was here hours after his shift had ended looking at pictures that he had just received from the crime lab. The pictures showed him bodies of mauled humans reminiscent of the bodies he had left before he was able to control himself. He knew the deaths were caused by another werewolf but that just didn't seem possible, he would have picked up a scent, and besides, werewolves were rare, only a few were left in the world and they preferred areas with lots of woods or lush vegetation, not sprawling metropolitans like Detroit. Matt stood up with a sigh and walked over to his sink looking at himself in the mirror. His long,dark black hair was a mess and his brown eyes looked sleepy, maybe he was tired and he was looking at the pictures wrong, the persons could have easily be mauled with some kind of blade or hook? He looked over at the clock, 6: 45 in the morning, maybe the crime lab's workers were on there way in, shift started around 7 for them so that gave him a chance to grab some coffee and head down to check the bodies for himself, maybe even pick up a scent. He sighed walking out his office door, looks like it was gonna be one of those weeks.

Kimberly blinked her eyes open,they felt gritty. SHe had only slept less than 2 hours. She dont know what awoke her but she sat up on the edge of the bed. Running her fingers through her hair she stood,padding towards the small bathroom. SHe stripped down and stepped into the shower. The hot shower seemed to bring her back to life somewhat.

After several minutes she stepped out and began to dry off. She had a tone and lithe body from years of working out. Her skin never seemed to hold a tan for long so her features were slightly pale. She ran the towel over her shoulders,the left shoulder bared a birthmarth that looked like a crescent moon. Herr brothers used to tease her that their mother was a witch,she laughed them off. She never knew her mother,she had died shortly after She was born.

Dressing in a pair of black khakis and a tan shirt she grabbed her purse on her way out the door. She drove the couple blocks to work and parked in her usual spot. She moved down the long corridor and frowned. A tall man was arguing with one of the new interns. She quickened her steps and soon stood behind them."Excuse me.....Can I help you?"She spoke softly but with force as she looked at Matt's back.

Matt turned to face the young woman who had just walked in. He had been arguing with the intern for almost half an hour now and he gave Kimberly a slightly annoyed look as she walked in. "I certainty hope so" he said, a little sharper then he attended to. He flashed her his detective badge and opened up the briefcase he was caring "I'm here to see the bodies that are in these pictures."

Kimberly waved off the intern and looked at the badge and photos. This must be a new detective,she knew almost all of them. She straightened up to her full height,what little good it did standing before him. "I'm Dr. Kimberly Moreland. Senior examiner,if you can curb your anger I will show you what i got."She said with her flame haired temper.

She unlocked the lab and dropped her purse on her desk,donning a lab coat she moved to her safe and opened it. She pulled out her reports and own photos. She handed them to Matt before moving to the cool cases. She opened three doors and pulled out each slab. The covered bodies opened for him to inspect. She stepped back.

"I have concluded the wounds are definately bite marks. Like a bear or wolf."She said oblivious to how close to the truth she was. "Each victim was red haired,early mid-twenties. No sexual assault. No hair or skin under the nails."She read off her notes before raising her head to look at him.

Matt instantly picked up the faint scent of a werewolf on the bodies, all of them had been murdered by the same one. "Defiantly a wolf." His mind was wondering elsewhere as he inspected the bodies, they were covered with gashes almost an inch deep. He looked back up at Kimberly "So if its a wolf, why would it be attacking just red heads?" he asked more thinking out loud then actually asking her. Wolfs, werewolves also, never were very particular on what they killed, as long as they felt it was a threat or food, then whatever it was, it was as good as dead. So why then did this werewolf want to go after redheads? It all just seemed to strange.

Kimberly shook her head and moved around the bodies. She pointed to the bite marks on the left shoulder of each of them. "Each body has been bitten in one identical spot,here."She said pointing. "But there are no wolves around here..I even laughed about it being a werewolf last night."She said laughing then turning red.

"Sorry,but when ya run on no sleep for almost 2 days ya can think of some weird shit."She said covering the bodies back up. SHe went and sat down behind her desk looking at him intently.

"So why did the police bring you in on this if it is just animal attacks. Shouldnt that be the game wardens or animal control?"She said tunring in her chair to pull a file from the filing cabinet there. She pulled out another folder and slid it to him.

"This file was faxed to me yesterday..seems not only have these three killings happened here but also in the neighboring cities,almost in a pattern. Like whoever the killer is is searching for someone in particular."

She stopped when the phone rang.."Excuse me." She said as she answer it. "Dr. Moreland...yes..ok..I'll be right there." She hung the phone up and looked at Matt. "There was another attack last night..only this time the vicitm is barely alive still. They want me there ASAP because her wounds are fatal." She said standing and grabbing her gear.

She didnt wait for Matt but rushed from the room and down the hallway. She quickly unlocked the coroners wagon and slid into the drivers seat,she looked over as Matt slid in. She shrugged and backed out of the parking area. The scene of the crime was only a couple blocks away,it seemed each killing got closer to the hospital. She stopped and was met by Jack Runyan of the P.D,he looked at Matt and Kimberly vouched for him. The vicitim lay among the trash bins in the alley,her body a mass of wounds,the worst one was like the others. Her left shuolder almost ripped off.

She was staring straight ahead mumbling words... "Wolf...man...no mark..."Was all she kept repeating. Kimberly looked at Matt and frowned he seemed to be sniffing the air.Her attention was averted as a long drawn out breath escaped the girl and life fled her body. Kimberly felt as if someone had walked over her grave,turning she looked aorund them. She could feel eyes on them,,but who was watching.

Matt knelt down next to the body of the girl and inspected the slashes on her body. Each one of them where around six inches long and three inches deep, bite marks on the girls neck and arms where an inch deep. Her clothes were left in tatters but there was no sign of rape. Matt tried to find any hair or fur on the body that would help him find out who this other werewolf could be but he couldn't find anything. He stood up again with a sigh, "Miss Moreland, you might wanna grab some coffee, it looks like its going to be a long night." He looks back down at the body. "I think we might want to take this body back to the lab, i hope we can find some kind of clue on this body."

Kimberly started at his voice,she had let herself zone out. She nodded,waving her arm the orderlies covered and bagged the body. She knew it would take them a good hour to get the body back to the morgue and assigned a number. She turned to look over at Matt.

"Theres a coffe house around the corner,we can go there and talk for a bit."She said signing off on the papers the Policeman handed her. She stopped once more and shivered.

The feeling of being watched covered her once more,she gave one last glance around them. Something caught her eye from the rooftop across the street. She squinted in the sun and held her hand over them. There was a figure standing on the edge.

"I think someone is very interested in all this."She said to Matt nodding in the direction of the figure. She frowned. It was gone. "I must be more tired than I thought. I could have sworn I just saw someone up there."

Matt quickly followed Kimberly's eyes to the rooftop and spotted a shadow watching them. He looked back at Kim and smiled trying to ease her, "that sounds like a good idea, it would give me the chance to get to know the person I'm working with a bit better." It sounded like flirting, and in some part it was she was attractive, and maybe making her think that he was flirting with her would help her from thinking that the next victim might be her.

Kimberly led him around the corner to the Coffee Castle, a small hole in the wall coffee shop. She walked in and the server called out a hello to her by name. Kimberly grinned and looked over and up at Matt. "I come here alot..I seem to live off coffee more than sleep."She said as she slid into a booth in the back corner.

She looked over at the Detective across from her and tried to figure out why he was called in. She waited until the server had brought them strong black coffees before she spoke softly enough for them alone even though they were the only ones in there.

"Ok, so why did the department bring you in? Seems kinda strange."She said as she took a sip of the liquid caffeine. She almost sighed as it hit her system."I have been the M.E for 3 years here and this is a first."

"So why do you think our perp is only after young red-heads?Pretty ones at that and with no sexual attack?"She asked him watching his eyes,they seemed an odd color but she couldnt really put a name to which color. He was watching her but she felt as if he was also aware,very aware of everything around them.

Matt sighed, "You know what we're going to have enough time to think about this case today, for know how bout you tell me about yourself. As for myself, I have a degree for criminal justice and worked for 5 years in Mississippi as a cop then moved up here and made my way up to detective." Most of this was a lie but there was no way Kimberly would know. "So what about yourself? I wouldn't expect someone so like yourself working in a crime lab?"

Kimberly watched him as he spoke then blushed when he asked about her. She looked away,her eyes surveying the cafe. She looked back at him after she had regain her composure. 'Well,I was born in Louisiana,raised her in Detroit.I have 4 older brothers and my dad died when I was a freshman in college. I never knew my mom she died after she had me,I studied to be a doctor but halfway through decided to become a Medical examiner."

She took a deep breath. "I figure everyone could be seen and healed by a doctor but what about the ones who died and noone knew how or why.So I ended up here and now."She blushed knowing he meant a more personal answer but she didnt kow what else to tell him.

"I never married and most boyfriends found it creepy being with a coroner. Hell I even forgot about my 29th birthday two days ago."She said laughing softly as she sipped her coffee.

"But you didnt want to really know all that,your trying to figure out who the next target is. With my red hair you think it could be me. Dont worry..I am beyond the age of our perps victims and not half as pretty."She said matter of factly. "Please dont beat around the bush with me.. If you have concerns or worries tell me. I'm a big girl and grew up in a tough town. I can handle myself."She said with a sly grin.

She jumped when her pager went off and she looked at the number. it was the lab. They had processed the body and it was time to get back to reality. She couldnt let herself get too personal anymore with Matt.

Matt gave her a grin sensing the shyness she had "Pretty and smart, I'm impressed, but yeah I am a bit worried about you, I think it would be a good idea to put you in protective custody until this case is solved." He looked over at her as the beeper went off "Duty calls?"

Kimberly nodded but then she stiffened at his statement. "I dont need protection,I am capable of taking care of myself,Detective."She said as she stood. She left her money to cover their coffees and headed to the door.She didnt say much as they walked back to the wagon and climbed in.

"I'm sure you are wrong,besides I work in a hospital next to the police department. Noone gets into my lab unless I or my orderly card them in."She said looking over at him.

They arrived back at the morgue and walked into the lab,Kimberly set the code and the doors locked behind them. She removed her jacket and revealed a tan top pulling that top off underneath she wore a white tank. She turned her back to him and reached for her lab coat. Her birthmark barely visible to his eyes. She buttoned up her coat and moved over to the body.

Uncovering the femal she took the basic notes,age,height,weight,identifying marks and such. Then she began to gauge the wounds. "If this was a wolf it had to have paws the size of a lions paw. and the claw marks are extremely deep and long."She said not only to him but the recording going along with her findings. "I want to know why each left shoulder is almost torn off.

She flipped on an ultr-violet light and shone it over the wound,she took photos then looked at Matt. "Theses are definately bites there seems to be a partial canine in the muscle here."She said moving so Matt could see,she bumped slightly into him and blushed.

Matt peered at the marks "Wolves don't usually come into the city, you know that werewolf idea is starting to seem more likely." He sighed looking at the clock "Listen I still think you might want to go into that protective custody, you don't know what your facing here."

Kimberly shook her head as she probed the wounds with swabs. "Listen Detective...Give me your cell number and if I need an protection Ill call you."She said stopping to look at him. Her eyes not backing down from this.

"I will have to be here for awhile longer and you need to go fill out your paperwork at the PD. If it makes you feel better come check on me before you leave."She said resting her hands on her hips watching him.

Matt sighed "Fine" he reached for a pad and scribbled his number on it. He grabbed his coat and turned around to look back at her. "Wear Silver tonight".

Matt walked up to his office and fixed another cup of strong coffee and fell back in his seat. Kimberly seemed like a tough girl but she didn't know what she was up against, but keeping an eye on her wouldn't be too hard especially sense they worked in the same building.

Kimberly continued to work until well after dark had fallen. She yawned and looked at the clock,12:30 am. Well she supposed she wasd one for the night. She pulled her soiled lab coat off and labeld a few bags to be sent off for testing. The grabbing her purse she stopped remembering Matt's words about the silver. She only had a small silver cross in her purse. She pulled it out and left the building.

The walk to her car seemed longer since all the shadows seemed to be following her. She got into her car and drove home. She did her usual once inside her apartment. Dropping her case at the door and stripping down to her female boxers and tank top. She went to grab a beer from the fridge and stopped. She could feel someone close by. She turned not seeiing anyone. Shrugging her shoulders she went in a dropped down on her sofa. Picking up her cell she dialed Matt's number.

"I made it home in one piece,just to let ou know. I am going to try to go to bed now and get some......"Her words stopped as she heard the breathing behind her. She spun off the couch dropping the still connected phone. 'What the hell!"She yelled as the man behind her sofa was gigantic andhalf covered in fur. His face still looked human.

"The mark..you have the mark..."He growled deeply as he advanced on her. Kimberly ducked and avoided one sharp claw that headed for her shoulder,taking a small slice to her upper arm. "Who the fuck are you! She called out not knowing Matt could hear her still.

She didnt have another choice as a large furred hand wrapped around her throat and slammed her against the wall. Its face now more canine then human snarled close to her cheek,sniffing. He dropped his head back and howled. Kimberly was trying to keep concious from the slam he gave her. She managed to get one hand up and pull out the small cross,it was enough for the beast to toss her quickly across the room,her body hitting the sofa and flipping over it.She closed her eyes as she heard more footsteps and thought Matt was right..she was going to die before she blacked out.

Matt had just finished his coffee when Kim called. He answered it and at first didn't hear anything but soon there were loud growls followed by growls. Matt grabbed his gun and quickly made his way out to his cruiser and drove his way to Kim's house. He ran into the house, the werewolf was inches away from Kim. Matt instictivly pulled out his Glock and fired off the rounds into the werewolf's back knowing that it wouldn't hurt it but hoped that it would turn its attention away from Kim.

The black werewolf bent over Kimberly's prone form,her scent filling his nose. Finally he had found her,the years of searching. The one who could change his life,make him stronger. He did not feel anything special for her as a mate would,he only needed to use her body for a purpose.

He howled as the biting bullets bit into his muscled flesh,turning he faced the man he had seen her with earlier. Sniffing he growled a challenge,this new man was also a were. But something about the way he defended the woman almost made the black wolf laugh if he could.

he knew the time was not right to claim Kimberly,his massive paw lifted her limp body by the neck and gave her a toss. Her body winded through the air towards Matt. While Matt was distracted the black wolf launched himself out the open window and off into the night.

Matt was knocked down as Kim's hurled body hit him square in the chest. He watched the wolf break out the window and run into the woods. He thought about going after it but Kim had passed out laying on top of him, and he also heard the sirens coming up the street, if they say him transforming into a werewolf well that would just cause a lot of problems. So he laid Kim on the floor and checked over her wounds making sure she wasn't too badly hurt.

Kimberly came awake quickly,her body a mess of pain. She cried out as hands touched her,thinking it was her attacker she fought back. Her mouth found one soft fleshy part of Matt's wrist and bit down. She heard the grunt of pain and a hand pulled her free with a firm tug on her hair. She blinked as she tried to focus on the face above her. Matt's face slowly came into view and she cuold taste the coopery taste of his blood on her tongue. It coated her lips like a crimson lipstick shade.
