Actually, it's not some much a matter of noveau riche, but more of a matter of survival in an environment. In the kind of environment in which the Mexican drug lords live, there are two key items for a man: front and rep. Front requires a flashy display of money. Taste is not a factor, only flash. Rep is even more important. A true drug kingpin must have the rep of one who will mercilessly sentence anyone who opposes him to death, or worse.
