Vitamins.

A few weeks ago I developed serious pain on my left side from the hip down to my foot. The pain got worse over time and moving or rising from bed was an ordeal. Even sitting was uncomfortable. The MD said arthritis. So I bought a cane, shuffled around, and threatened to beat the kiddies at the bus stop in front of the house.

Then it occurred to me that I had started using a multi-vitamin about the time the pain started. Last Friday I discontinued the vitamins and today the symptoms are almost gone.

Vitamins, like everything else, is good in moderate amounts. Also, it's one of those things that some peeps are somewhat allergic to. Especially D and B6. I can't take vitamin D supplements unless I'm really careful, it messes up my digestion.

Well that's pretty weird, developing a toxic reaction to things that occur naturally in the body. High doses of B12 can cause inflamtion, but that takes more than what you should get in a multi-vitamin. Were these some Nonamo brand of vitamins?

A pain that starts in the hip and goes down to the ankle sounds an awful lot like sciatica, a compressed sciatic nerve. I used to get that when I was overtired or had been on my feet too long. I had to give up streetwalking.

Some people have ideosyncratic responses to stuff. MDs go with the odds. All I know is the pain and ambulation distress started when I started the vitamins, and now its gone. Plus I've had problems with vitamins in the past. If the pain and distress return, then its back to MD school for me.

I used to get Sciatica. Pain worst in the hip and lower leg but attenuated towards the knee, tho' when the pain was at its worst it 'joined up'. It was fixed by getting some podatric work done. The cause was flat feet! Artificial arches fixed it but it took a while. Walking on any flat surface was murder though walking over uneven ground was fine.

Arthritis seems to be a default diagnosis for MD's who cannot be bothered to look further.

Youre correct about the MDs; theyre awful when it comes to diagnoses, and rely on going with the numbers. But sometimes they get really stupid and ignore the obvious. I believe I told about the MD who sent me a woman with headaches. I called him up..WHY ARE YOU SENDING ME A HEADACHE? He said, BECAUSE THE PAIN IS IN HER HEAD, I said, THERE ARE NO PAIN RECEPTORS IN THE BRAIN! She was a phenobarbital addict trying to get a prescription for it.

JOMAR Yep. Most of us pee gold. I believe in eating correctly, but the pills were a freebie.

The best MD I ever worked with was an old man who was my pediatrician when I was a squirt. Very good doctor. He retired and took a job with the school system, evaluating special ed kids, and he used to send me kids to assess for ADD.

JBJ glad to hear you're feeling better. But, what are you gonna do now that you don't have a cane to poke the bus stop kids with?

Also, isn't it all fat soluble vitamins that are bad in high doses: A, D, E, and K? I remember reading that about 25 years ago in a middle school text.

Bear in mind that not all supplements are equal in quality. A lot of the random commercial or generic brands in the store are full of dyes, additives, preservatives, etc and are manufactured in China. So, be careful that what you take is from a reliable company. I'd go to a local health food store instead of Walmart or Walgreens. Also, be careful that the supplement you take is geared toward your age and sex. Men don't really need iron, unless they don't get it from a food source.

PEN&PAPER, SCARLETT ET AL

I have no idea what messed me up, but I thought about it and reasoned that vitamins may be the culprits in food allergies...if the amount of the vitamin is at a toxic level for your body.

Some of these pills contain huge amounts of specific vitamins and minerals, like 400% of the RDA.
