I dunno. He's not here very often and doesn't really have that troll quality. Usually just a thread, gets pissed because everyone calls him a pedo and leaves. Seems like most people get a creepy vibe from him, too.

The OP does bring up a great point: In each era, there are certain accusations that are, when made, either presumed to be true -- absent any evidence whatsoever, and have tremendous staying power long after they have been debunked.

History shows us that over time these flame-labels change: Heretic, Witch, Anarchist, Communist, pedophile. When used in real life to label someone about whom the accuser has no real information is mere flaming -- worthless outside a chuckle here and there. When real people are actually publicly accused of such things, many will either presume it to be true or, more likely, will "err on the side of caution" and dismiss the matter with, "Well, true or not, after hearing that I certainly would not let my kids hang out with that person."

The sentiments of the times dictate which labels have that special presumed-guilty err-on-the-side-of-caution character.

Readers of American History and the Law might recall the plight of John Henry Faulk, the CBS radio and television star who was unsuccessfully blackmailed by a couple of wealthy creeps (grocers!) who ran an extreme right-wing publication (AWARE!, Inc.) with the backing of such saints and heroes as Tail-gunner Joe (Senator Joseph McCarthy (R-WI)). When Faulk refused to pay them protection money (to certify that he is a loyal American) the right-wingers tarred the man with the then popular brush known as "Communist." Louis Nizer, one of the greatest high-profile attorneys of his day, managed to secure a $3.5 million libel judgment -- later reduced to $550,000 on appeal on Faulk's behalf. Nizer's efforts are credited with breaking the back of the broadcasting blacklist crap of the day.

However, Faulk never regained his stature in the business. Had it not been for the brave and costly support given the man by broadcasting giant Edward R. Murrow, Faulk might never have worked in the business again. Faulk received the Paul Robeson Award in 1983. Austin's main library branch is named after Faulk. If Christ died for our sins, John Henry Faulk suffered personally more than anyone else that comes to mind, for our freedom of speech. His is a true American hero.

All that is to say that nasty labels given to people here (idiot, faggot, pedo, etc.) are meaningless because nothing said here is likely to affect our real life earning capacity or social position since very few of us show our posts here to the boss.

But in every generation, some new label takes on this hysterical force.

In California family law, when a spouse falsely accuses the other spouse of having sexual relations with their minor children, and the falseness is shown (or truth of the matter fails to be property shown), there is a rebuttable presumption that the parent making the false accusation is, by definition, unfit to parent. Why? As the OP points out, anyone who makes that kind of a false accusation clearly disregards the damage it does to the children.

In one not-so-humorous case, a man was falsely accused of having sex with his minor children. He was ordered to serve time, of course, go to special pedo classes, etc. When grilled by her own attorney, the woman admitted that she made it all up and she was quite sure that the man (her husband) never had any inappropriate contact with their kids or any other kids for that matter, but merely that she was very angry about the monetary distribution and saw it as a way to get even. She was lambasted by the judge (commissioner/judge) for her perjury, etc., etc. The man was released immediately with the apologies of the Court, etc. Two months later he was arrested for failing to attend his Pedo classes. Hahahahahaha.... okay not funny if you're the guy, but funny anyway. The man's attorney had not received a complete list of the institutions and programs that had to be notified of the man's innocence and one had reported his failure to attend to the authorities.
